Ranch manager wanted

SoMar Farms is seeking an individual or couple to manage the ranch. A pasture based, mixed livestock operation located in Sonoma and Marin counties, 1 hr North of San Francisco, SoMar Farms produces grass fed and finished beef and lamb in an environmentally conscious manner.

The ideal candidate(s), will have a background in Management Intensive Grazing, low stress livestock handling and grass finishing livestock. Experience designing and implementing water systems would be advantageous as would prior dealings with different funding agencies i.e. NRCS, RCD etc.

The cow herd grazes year round by means of extensive use of MiG on a 600 acre parcel of rangeland. Flexibility and ingenuity in temporary fencing is key to ensuring the success of the cowherd grazing program. Stockers and finishers are fed minimal amounts of hay seasonally with the goal of eliminating all substitute feeding wherever possible.

A smaller ~30 acre parcel has been set up with multiple single-strand HT fences and water access points to facilitate MiG. ~10 of these acres are seasonally irrigated with a water cannon.

The third parcel comprising ~220 acres has been subdivided into mostly 15 acre fields with water in each. This property is also used to custom graze ~50 stockers seasonally.

This position is ideal for a self-motivated person(s), who can help the owners achieve their goals of restoring and improving the land whilst creating a high quality meat product. Direct marketing is a huge growth area and knowledge/experience in this area is highly desirable.

The owners and their children live on the ranch and are very proactive in land restoration/erosion control, tree plantings, fiber production and egg production. We are not certified but follow organic principles – this means we don’t use hormones etc and also spend a lot of time on less glamorous tasks i.e. hand pulling thistles rather than spraying them. Over time with improved grazing management and correspondingly increased pasture health we will continue to eradicate these less desirable plants.

Experience in the following desired –

MiG (Jim Gerrish)
Low stress livestock handling (Bud Williams)
Herd health, record keeping and vaccination protocol
Purchasing and selling of livestock
Equipment operation – skid steer, backhoe, gooseneck trailer, chainsaw
Business development and marketing skills

This position comes with housing, benefits and competitive salary.
