We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Agricultural Specialist to oversee the orchards, landscaping, and irrigation systems of a private ranch located near San Juan Capistrano, CA.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform a wide range of maintenance tasks using hand and power tools, including laying sod, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, and installing sprinklers.
- Maintain and minor repair of irrigation systems, recreational areas, and ranch infrastructure.
- Develop and recommend seasonal maintenance schedules (e.g., irrigation, turf and soil management, tree and shrub care) and review them regularly with ownership.
- Plant trees, shrubs, and other vegetation as needed or at the discretion of management.
- Perform arbor care duties, including debris cleanup, while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
- Inventory and manage tools, equipment, and materials.
- Ensure roads throughout the ranch are clear, well-maintained, and repaired as needed.
- Assist with additional ranch tasks based on seasonal needs and owner requests.
- Communicate regularly with ownership via text, email, and phone.
Qualifications:
- 3 years of experience with agriculture, horticulture, including equipment and animal care
- Strong knowledge and passion for outdoor plants, with the ability to identify species, advise on plant/tree selections, and make horticultural recommendations for year-round orchard and landscape care.
- Hands-on experience in nursery operations, garden maintenance, or landscaping preferred.
- Familiarity with insect, rodent, and bird identification, along with practical knowledge of control methods.
- Proficient in landscape irrigation systems and water distribution methods, including drip systems, bubblers, MP rotators, and irrigation audits.
- Solid understanding of landscape construction techniques and materials, including irrigation installation, planting, and basic hardscape (e.g., pavers).
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, perform physical labor (bending, stooping, kneeling), and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable working on ladders and standing for extended periods outdoors.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to see projects through to completion.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Schedule:
- 3 weekdays and 1 weekend day required, with on-call availability as needed by ownership.
- 25-30 hours/week
Ability to commute:
- San Juan Capistrano, CA: Ability to commute with a utility vehicle that can drive on dirt roads (Preferred)
