D B CUSENBARY RANCHE, EST 1888 4th Generation 3600 ACRES SONORA TX

LOCATION: We are in West Texas, 35 minutes from Sonora, 95 miles from San Angelo. Sonora social life is high school football, 14 churchs and 2 rodeos. Neighbors are far down the road. The hunters are our social life. They are nice and fun.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF COWBOY: RANCHER/CARE TAKER: No ranching experience required. You can learn. Retired, disability and Vets are welcome. If you are a couple, we hire 1 person. The spouse is only paid on a job to job basis if we need more hands and it will be put in writing. Let us know what both of your skill levels are. We run a ranche. You get the whole package.

We are looking for someone long term to embrace being a rancher. Real ranchers understand work 7 days a week and few neighbors close by. On a family ranch we do everything so we added caretaker that has to do with living on a ranche. We try to work short days when it is cold and try to do the same when it is too hot. Weekends can be shorter days of checking water.

You want 8 to 5? Find a corporate organization. Water troughs break down and freeze in winter, wells quit working on their own time, not your calendar. Running a ranch is more than taking care of livestock.

RANCHING: Feed the 2 horses you can ride. Feed goats alfalfa or corn when it is dry, put out salt licks and molasses. Sometimes goats get stuck in fences, water troughs go down, wells don’t cooperate, draws push water gaps fences down, pipes break and we have goats we work 3 to 4 times a year then drive to auction. We have excellent fences but hogs do break in. Fix the fence. We supply traps, gun and ammo. Shooting varmints is a favorite pastime. Guns have to be cleaned if you know how. No Felons allowed. We graze cattle and sheep. We have to supply water and fencing, so we check water 2x daily and fences less often. We provide SUV, truck, four wheeler or use the side by side (with owner.) and fuel. We have a tractor and backhoe for heavier work. We haul water if water wells are out. . We have grazing for 50 to 135 cattle, depending on rain, grazing 350 sheep and our goats. We only work the goats. We pick up feed: alfalfa, corn and salt licks for hunters and ourselves. . We fix gates, buildings, water troughs, and keep a lot of engines running. We train the animals to come to feed with a horn. Goats can take some quad on the rocks time. The Ranche is the boss. If a pipe breaks, that is what we fix. Corn feeder destroyed by goats. We fix it. It rains? Put up the water gaps and mow the grass on a riding lawn mower. Feral hogs? Traps and rifles. Varmint hunting? We provide ammo and gun. No Felons.

DEER HUNTING: We have a lot of Axis deer, so we hunt year around. Duties for taking care of the hunter’s accommodations and paperwork required is part of the job. We provide the printer. They also pay for help. They offer work if you are willing. They do pay to have feeders filled and checked 2x a month year round. Some hunters will pay to have deer backstrap removed and the rest processed to quarters (and will teach you) and carcass removal. Some pay to have you clean up when they leave. We take care of the hunter’s sheets and towels and buildings. In a US survey, Texas has the most Axis, Sutton County has the most in Texas counties and MLD tells us he has never seen so many deer on a ranch.

CARETAKING: We leave for 1 to 3 weeks and need a responsible person to leave the ranche animals and pets. This includes mowing, watering, feeding the cats (we provide food). We are putting in a small orchard. Have an indoor dog. My dog will be in your house when we leave. We are finishing the restoration of an old building and need someone who can measure a board, cut straight and hand it to Neal.

HOUSING: We provide unfurnished housing with all utilities, 2 BR/1 bath, W/D, AC, gas stove, refrigerator, Starlink internet, landline and 2 decks. There is no fenced yard. You need your own insurances. I lived in the house for 6 months. See the FB page for pictures. The furniture in the pictures is not included. There is a raised garden with a fence and a wind screen if you want to grow things. There are no fences around the house.

YOU: You need a resume that includes work skills and work history and if your spouse wants occasional work. You need references with phone numbers. You need an indoor dog that will leave the livestock alone and not wander away, common sense and not afraid to ask questions. We need integrity. What you don’t know, we teach you. Pluses are enough carpentry to measure a board and cut it straight, welding on few occasions and we maintain a lot of engines and motors. Pluses are a jack of all trades master of non. Sometimes it is better to teach the right way than retrain the wrong way. You need to get here for a live interview.

40 hours 7 days a week, paid weekly income $400 with housing.

We are NOT looking for anyone interested in equine care or a rodeo cowboy with skills we seldom need. Years of working cattle breeding is a waste of your skills here.

WHO WE ARE: Native Heart of Texas, Kelley inherited the family ranche 8 years ago. She spent a lot of time here through college. Neal is a redneck that worked summers for his grandfather working cattle and learning carpentry. He worked for GM for 25 years, raced cars, built engines, bullrider, Cowboy poker, Jr. Rodeo sponsor. He was a contractor and we flipped houses and rentals together. We have the skills to teach. So, no experience is required.
