Job Title: Assistant Trail Boss

Reports To: Trail Boss
Job Summary:
The Assistant Trail Boss supports the Trail Boss in the day-to-day operations and oversight of The Fort Worth Herd. This includes livestock care, staff leadership, event coordination, and ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals and personnel involved in the program. The role requires excellent horsemanship, livestock handling, operational management, and communication skills.
The Assistant Trail Boss will interact with agencies, partners, contractors, vendors, and other business partners, as needed. Assist drovers with professional development regarding cattle handling for the twice-daily cattle drive and other special events. Assist drovers with professional development regarding horsemanship.
Essential Livestock Functions:
- Oversee daily care and humane treatment of Texas Longhorns and remuda horses, including feeding, grooming, medical treatment, pasture rotation, and training.
- Conduct and supervise cattle drives twice daily, ensuring all animals and staff follow safety protocols.
- Evaluate livestock and horses for temperament, health, and performance.
- Manage loading/unloading and safe transport of livestock and horses.
- Maintain functionality and cleanliness of all tack, trailers, and herd equipment.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and emergency response for facilities and livestock.
- Assess and evaluate new livestock for program suitability.
Administrative and Safety Functions:
- Conduct regular safety meetings and ensure all equipment meets safety standards.
- Maintain inventory and order supplies such as feed, hay, and medical supplies.
- Schedule services with veterinarians, farriers, and other equine/livestock partners.
- Assist with annual budget planning and monitor operational expenses.
- Facilitate repair and maintenance of facilities and herd infrastructure.
- Coordinate procurement and bid processes for equipment and supplies.
Staff Leadership and Development
- Supervise and mentor drovers, focusing on cattle handling, horsemanship, and professional growth.
- Assist with staff scheduling and training.
- Promote an inclusive and respectful work environment aligned with Visit Fort Worth’s mission and values.
- Support performance evaluation processes and conflict resolution as needed.
Visitor Engagement & Community Representation
- Interact professionally with the public, partners, and stakeholders during cattle drives and special events.
- Represent The Fort Worth Herd in a professional and welcoming manner.
- Provide interpretive or educational information to enhance visitor experiences when appropriate.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions regarding livestock, equipment and personnel management.
- Materials, methods and techniques commonly used in livestock management and ranching.
- Additional specific duties related to equine, bovine management and ranching.
- Principles of training and monitoring lower-level staff.
- Conflict resolution, motivation, evaluating employees and empowerment.
- Operation of equipment, tools, tractor, truck, and trailers.
Ability to:
- Effectively follow the Trail Boss’s instructions to direct and lead employees to ride horses in a safe manner to direct cattle on a predetermined path.
- Drive trucks and haul livestock gooseneck trailers when needed.
- Operate tractor and equipment when needed.
- Organize, manage and review the work of subordinate personnel.
- Interpret and explain applicable policies and procedures.
- Handle cattle on foot and on horseback, when needed using low-stress techniques.
- Interpret policies and communicate clearly and concisely both verbal and written.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of responsible experience in personnel management including livestock-related activities.
- Five (5) years of responsible experience supervising a livestock operation to include cattle and horses.
Education
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in personnel and livestock management.
License
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Texas drivers’ license Class C or equivalent and an acceptable driving record.
Working Conditions:
- Indoor and outdoor environments; exposure to inclement weather conditions while inspecting various field operations sites; exposure to chemicals, toxic materials, and water as related to assigned tasks; hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle.
- Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for climbing, stooping, moderate to heavy lifting, or standing related to completing assigned tasks; general manual dexterity; adequate speech, vision, and hearing required; must be able to operate assigned equipment.
