The equine department at The Retreat at Balcones Springs is looking to hire an Assistant Barn Manager/Ranch Hand. This position will report directly to the Barn Manager. We are a 250 acre facility, which provides group and corporate retreats and outings during the non-summer season. During the summer season, we hold 9 weeks of Summer Camp (Camp Balcones Springs) for kids of all ages. Our equine department currently has 13 horses, 3 donkeys, 1 llama, 1 goat and 1 sheep that we look after. Typical duties for the assistant barn manager include, feeding three times per day, mucking out stalls and paddocks as needed, as well as general horse care and safety. Our biggest priority is providing a safe and caring environment for our equine partners. The assistant barn manager will also take on a leadership role during our summer camp months, and ensure the safety of our horses, staff and campers during trail rides and ground work sessions.

Responsibilities of the Assistant Barn Manager include but are not limited to the following:

  • Feeding three times per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Ensuring hay nets are in good condition and that round bales are replaced when needed
  • Farrier assistance
  • Veterinary care; including deworming, medications, treating wounds as needed
  • Ensuring water troughs are cleaned weekly and free of leaks/kinks
  • Mucking out stalls, and manure is cleared out of smaller paddocks
  • Check on fencing and fix when necessary
  • Tack is cleaned and conditioned weekly
  • Blanket horses when weather dictates
  • Exercising horses

Knowledge requirements:

  • Be able to properly halter and lead a horse
  • Be able to groom and correctly pick horses feet
  • Knowledge of feeding and providing correct supplement dosage
  • Knowledge of general medical care and signs of medical emergency
  • Ability to lift 50+lbs
  • Ability to fix fences preferred
  • Ability to load and drive trailer highly preferred
  • Connection work with horses desired
  • Confident riding ability
