PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

This position resides on or near the American Prairie Reserve and is primarily responsible for assisting with the management of APR’s bison herd with additional manual work and duties pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the land infrastructure, facilities, structures, grasslands, livestock and wildlife. Position assists with programs and development through outreach, donor and fundraising support, public relations, and job supervision of Reserve Technicians and seasonal/part time employees.

Bison Management and Reserve Restoration (80%)

  • Responsible for bison containment including ensuring the completion of monitoring and weekly maintenance on 100+ miles of fence.
  • Plan and direct fence construction and removal. Complete cost estimates, analyze bids and award contracts. Manage fence projects and fencing contractors during jobs to ensure they are on time, on budget, and their work is to APR standards.
  • Assist with returning escaped bison as soon as we are made aware of the escape, even outside of normal work hours.
  • Participate in bison capturing, handling and relocating. Participate in other bison management activities, including, bi-annual aerial surveys, darting and disease testing, and assisting with hay distribution and bison feeding across properties on the reserve.
  • Coordinate the setup, teardown, moving and maintenance of the mobile bison handling facility.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest bison management practices such as trainings, bison conferences, and local interest group meetings.
  • Collaborate with Reserve team on habitat management.
  • Work in collaboration with external collaborators to provide input on wildlife management recommendations.

Reserve Operations (15%)

  • Assist with training new Reserve Technicians.
  • Participate in infrastructure work of the reserve area including, pumps, wells, gas lines, livestock/bison operations, and other structures and improvements as needed.
  • Locate, document, and report noxious weeds for control actions.
  • Fire patrol and suppression.
  • Ensure all fence mapping data is collected and up to date.
  • Assist with monitoring of facilities and report repair and maintenance needs.
  • Assist in special projects and activities as identified by Senior Bison Restoration Manager.

Donor and Public Relations (5%)

Provide property tours, support, assistance and act as a representative of APR to guests, current and prospective donors, neighbors and representatives of government agencies as needed.
Meet with and maintain positive relationships with neighbors and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of APR’s mission, goals and culture.
  • 2-3 years related experience or related degree required.
  • Interact positively and productively with co-workers, agencies, neighbors, donors, local area organizers, and others in the interest of APR’s mission and goals.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to follow direction, to collaborate effectively with others, and to work autonomously.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to communicate issues and concerns clearly, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to evaluate information and determine compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Ability to follow and enforce safety and compliance guidelines and policy.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft office and Internet.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, ability to drive frequently.
  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery such as trucks, tractors, backhoe, skid-steer, snowmobiles, UTVs and ATVs.
  • Ability to operate power tools such as power saws and other hand tools.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75lbs.
  • Required ability to live on or near the American Prairie Reserve.
  • Ability to travel outside of the Reserve occasionally.

Preferred:

  • Fencing maintenance and construction experience.
  • Familiarity with local area, politics, and government agencies.
  • Basic knowledge of native and noxious plants in Northeast Montana.
  • Basic knowledge of grazing management preferred.
  • Welding skills preferred.

EXTENUATING WORK CONDITIONS: Role requires physically laborious work and exertion in variable and extreme weather conditions, at remote and isolated locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain. Requires exposure to and use of hazardous equipment and tools and frequent driving including on hazardous roads and terrain. This position requires working long hours and/or evening and weekend hours in order to meet job needs.
