Job Description: Cattle Operations Manager

Location: Georgetown County, South Carolina, Phillips County, Montana
Position Description:
This position is based in the SC Lowcountry and requires seasonal travel to central Montana for up to six weeks a year. Both family-owned properties prioritize upland bird hunting (wild bobwhite quail, sharptailed grouse). In SC, patch-burn grazing is integral to quail management; in MT, grazing is used to promote prairie grouse habitat. Deeded land across both properties exceeds 14,000 acres, neither is hunted commercially. The SC herd consists of 240 cow-calf pairs, yearling heifers, steers, and bulls which are overwintered on property. Grazing is currently leased out in MT.
We are seeking a skilled professional who is interested in implementing cow/ calf operations that enhance gamebird populations. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires horseback cattle work, heavy equipment / farm machinery operation, managerial skills as well as knowledge of wildlife ecology.
The properties employ a full-time workforce of 7 employees. This position will report to the manager.
Qualifications
Primary Duties
- Supervise and lead day-to-day cattle operations such as feeding, moving, branding, doctoring, calving, weaning, shipping, and marketing
- Maintain accurate records via Cattle Inventory and Herd Manager programs
- Train and supervise seasonal ranch hands
- Operation of heavy equipment
- Establishment and maintenance solar wells, water sources, firebreaks, and various agricultural practices
At times, the cattle manager will participate in additional duties including prescribed burning.
Cattle Manager will need working knowledge of:
- General livestock operations including horseback cattle work
- Heavy equipment operations
- Grazing practices for wildlife management
- Pesticides application
- Computer Skills (Excel, Google Earth, onX) and Data Collection
- Prescribed burning and predator management are helpful
Ability to operate farm trucks, ATV’s, boats, and firearms is a requirement. Must have a valid driver’s license and completion of I-9.
Individuals must have the ability to work without direct supervision and have the necessary skills to organize workloads and communicate with others. Must have the ability to collect data and keep accurate records and the physical stamina to work outdoors for extended periods of time.
Hours: Monday through Friday with seasonal irregular hours on weekends
Salary and Benefits
This is a salaried position. Compensation will be informed by experience level but will be in the range of $60,000-$70,000. Housing is provided as well as simple IRA retirement plan with 3% match.
Company participates in a bi-weekly payroll, and each employee must provide direct deposit information.
A house located on the property is available for this position with utilities covered, as well as travel to and from Montana.
Employees initially receive five vacation days per year and company honors six federal vacation days annually (New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).
