El Papalote Ranch
Overview:
We are currently seeking a full-time Ranch Hand/Hunting Guide to join our team for immediate hire. Our ranch is located in Maverick County between Uvalde and Eagle Pass, Texas. The ranch is used for a mix of personal use as well as paid hunting guests, especially during deer season. This person should have a strong background in ranching, a passion for animals and South Texas heat and humidity, be ready to work, be service orientated and able to work with both the on-site ranch manager as well as ownership and sub-contractors on various projects.
You will work under the Ranch Manager using established checklists but also using situational awareness to spot work that needs doing before being asked. Whether it is fixing a leak, washing a muddy truck, or tidying the lodge / shop, you understand that the small details matter at our ranch.
Responsibilities:
Ranch, Land & Wildlife Operations
- Maintain grounds, roads, yards, and common areas.
- Assist with wildlife management, including feeder operations, habitat support, and related tasks
- Inspect and maintain ponds and water features (tire drinkers, water troughs).
- Drive and inspect fence lines, trim brush and repair damage.
- Support predator management efforts as directed.
- Assist in general ranch and hunting-season operations as requested. (Guiding, field dressing harvested wildlife, blind maintenance.)
Irrigation, Maintenance & Repair
- Monitor and maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems.
- Perform basic PVC and plumbing repairs.
- Identify issues early and correct them or report to Ranch Manager.
- Perform general maintenance and repairs as required around ranch.
- Maintain yard around lodge to ensure beautification of landscape.
Equipment & Shop
- Operate tractor, skid steer, mower, and ranch equipment safely.
- Perform routine maintenance (greasing, fluids, blade changes, basic upkeep).
- Maintain a clean, organized shop, barn and work area.
- Clean, store, and care for tools and equipment properly.
- Basic welding
Manager Support & Daily Operations
- Follow daily assignments, priorities, and checklists provided by the Ranch Manager / Owners.
- Adjust work based on season, ranch needs, guest arrival and hunting activity.
- Preform additional ranch duties as assigned; ranch work varies day to day.
Guest Presence (As Needed)
- When guests are on site, at times work may be focused to the lodge & shop to avoid disturbing hunts.
- Maintain basic order in common areas (visible trash, full trash cans, entry areas, stocked beverage coolers, and clean transportation).
- This does not replace our professional cleaning services and is part of normal ranch awareness to support our guests.
Schedule
- Full-time position and at times a variable schedule.
- Weekends and evenings required during hunting season, guest visits or as management requests.
- This is not a Monday – Friday 8-5 job.
Compensation
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- On-site housing is available (1 bed / 1bath apartment in shop area – includes, electricity, water and gas). Ability to commute from nearby towns is acceptable as well.
- Opportunity for additional income through tips and advancement.
Requirements:
- MUST have a valid driver’s license
- 5+ years of full-time experience in ranch work
- Pass a background check and drug screening
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in both hot and cold conditions
- Ability to lift and carry over 50lbs
- Be able to work independently or as part of a team
- Guiding experience is preferred (We have trophy whitetail and exotic animals, guiding experience is preferred however, not mandatory if applicant has strong background in overall ranch work, i.e. machinery, construction, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc.)
- This position will require physical labor. Ranch hands and Guides primarily work outdoors, and the work can be strenuous, requiring physical strength and coordination. Long hours are common, especially during busy seasons.
Final Notes:
- We pride ourselves on the experience our guests have while at the ranch. Yes, we are a working ranch, but a friendly, helpful attitude is non-negotiable. Whether helping guests with luggage or holding the door, we expect our team to treat the owners and guests with the utmost respect and courtesy.
