Experienced Equine and Ranch Caretaker wanted in Southern AZ

We are seeking someone who has actual, hands-on, adulthood/recent experience in taking care of horses. There is no riding involved. Daily chores consist of feeding and manure removal which takes 2 hrs AM and PM for one person. There are other workers here also, so at times you may be working with them or alone. There are projects on the ranch to do, so solid handyman skills are important.

Please read the following list of essential skills, and if you meet all of them, please reach out. We’ve had a very challenging year of no shows or people claiming to have experience but really not being able to do the work when they arrive. We are seeking a capable person or couple, not just someone seeking a free place to live.

Having your own RV or LQ trailer is preferred, we have full RV hookups with 50 amp electric. Happy to discuss bringing a horse if you have one, but please realize care and maintenance of your personal horse is your responsibility. We may have housing, but no pets are allowed in our housing and you’ll need to place a deposit.

Pay depends upon experience. The work is part time to start, you’ll have days off, and you’re welcome to work online or off the property so long as it doesn’t prevent working here. We do not have the capacity to train people outside of showing someone how we do things here. If the owner has to be here working with someone, that is a volunteer position, because the owner misses work to be here. Short term will be considered, longer term preferred.

If honesty, reliability, and integrity are important to you, we’d love to talk with you.

We are in a beautiful mountain location surrounded by National Forest. There is a lake nearby, hiking trails, and two towns within a 25 minute easy drive. Life here is peaceful and we don’t appreciate drama.

We are seeking someone who:

  • is a US citizen
  • has extensive horse care experience. This means you know how and what to feed, you can detect illness and lameness and you are able to communicate this to the owner, call a vet when needed, and/or give medications.
  • is a nonsmoker (vape is ok), no heavy alcohol use, and no recreational drugs. Impaired thinking is dangerous around large animals.
  • has their own vehicle to travel into town for personal needs like groceries, etc
  • is a self starter, meaning can work alone with minimal supervision and also work with others
  • is reliable, follows through, and is prepared to relocate to AZ. Better yet if you already live in state
  • is able to lift bales of hay that weigh 100# and feed bags that weigh 50-80#
  • is in good health and body condition to do manual labor a few hours daily
  • is able to safely operate a tractor
  • is willing and able to do a variety of tasks – weed removal, tree branch removal, etc; make runs to the dump as needed, painting shelters, etc
  • understands that AZ can be cold, hot, rainy, windy, and beautiful and the work still needs to get done
  • can pass a background check. We are near a military installation, and the fastest way into town is through that facility. To receive a visitor pass you will need to successfully pass a background check. If not, you can drive around the long way into town. Just understand it takes longer and uses more time/fuel.
  • has professional references that can speak to your horse care experience (not friends/family.) We are happy to share a list of our references also in case you want to talk with folks who have lived and worked here during the past 20 yrs.

TO APPLY:

Please feel free to reach out with questions. You can email or call / text. Please send your list of horse care experience and at least two professional references.

Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.
