Cow-calf operation in Ashland, OR seeks a long-term ranch manager to oversee all aspects of the ranching operation. We manage cattle as a tool for ecological restoration, prioritizing biodiversity alongside production.
Owner participates fully in strategic planning and major decisions. We’re looking for an experienced right-hand to manage operational complexity and act as project manager for infrastructure and other projects across the entire operation.
This is a full-time role. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
Responsibilities
Project Management
- Manage multiple infrastructure projects in parallel, making hard calls on scope and costs
- Hold contractors accountable for timeline, budget, and quality, ensuring that work gets completed correctly the first time
- Execute the annual livestock production plan and grazing plan
- Maintain ranch infrastructure: fences, roads, corrals, irrigation systems, buildings
- Keep owner informed while operating independently with minimal oversight
Ranch Management
- Monitor herd health through daily visual inspections of cattle, feed, and water sources
- Oversee the artificial insemination program
- Oversee and participate in the shipping of cattle between properties
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment (tractors, dozers, graders, skid steers)
- Supervise and coordinate a small existing crew
What We’re Looking For
- 3+ years of hands-on ranch experience: Heavy equipment operation, cattle nutrition, working with vets, AI programs, irrigation management.
- Systems thinker: See how everything connects, consider second-order effects, solve problems before they escalate
- Thrive in dynamic environments: Operate independently in ambiguous situations, make judgment calls without waiting for instruction, comfortable with plans changing
- Constant learner: Creative problem-solver, curious about why things work, always interested in process improvement
- Technical: Competence in mechanical repair, fencing, carpentry, and light plumbing or electrical work. CDL or heavy-equipment operation certification preferred.
- Physical: Ability to manage a physically demanding workload in varied outdoor conditions
