Cow-calf operation in Ashland, OR seeks a long-term ranch manager to oversee all aspects of the ranching operation. We manage cattle as a tool for ecological restoration, prioritizing biodiversity alongside production.

Owner participates fully in strategic planning and major decisions. We’re looking for an experienced right-hand to manage operational complexity and act as project manager for infrastructure and other projects across the entire operation.

This is a full-time role. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.

Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Manage multiple infrastructure projects in parallel, making hard calls on scope and costs
  • Hold contractors accountable for timeline, budget, and quality, ensuring that work gets completed correctly the first time
  • Execute the annual livestock production plan and grazing plan
  • Maintain ranch infrastructure: fences, roads, corrals, irrigation systems, buildings
  • Keep owner informed while operating independently with minimal oversight

Ranch Management

  • Monitor herd health through daily visual inspections of cattle, feed, and water sources
  • Oversee the artificial insemination program
  • Oversee and participate in the shipping of cattle between properties
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment (tractors, dozers, graders, skid steers)
  • Supervise and coordinate a small existing crew

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of hands-on ranch experience: Heavy equipment operation, cattle nutrition, working with vets, AI programs, irrigation management.
  • Systems thinker: See how everything connects, consider second-order effects, solve problems before they escalate
  • Thrive in dynamic environments: Operate independently in ambiguous situations, make judgment calls without waiting for instruction, comfortable with plans changing
  • Constant learner: Creative problem-solver, curious about why things work, always interested in process improvement
  • Technical: Competence in mechanical repair, fencing, carpentry, and light plumbing or electrical work. CDL or heavy-equipment operation certification preferred.
  • Physical: Ability to manage a physically demanding workload in varied outdoor conditions

TO APPLY:

Applications by email only.

  • Attach resume and two professional references with name, email, phone number, and nature of relationship.
  • Email body (2-4 sentences for each):
    • Why are you interested in this position?
    • What is your ranching experience? (Be specific.)
