POSITION:

We are looking for a full-time, year-round farm hand to help operate a 200-acre alfalfa farm, which doubles as wintering ground for a cow-calf operation. Primary duties in the summer will be operating wheel lines for about 200 acres of alfalfa from mid-April to early September. Winter duties will include calving, herd health, and hay feeding for about 10-12 weeks of the year. The right person will also have a strong work ethic and the physical ability to do manual labor outdoors for long hours.

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Oversee wheel-line irrigation on about 200 acres
  • Assist with hay production as needed
  • Repair and build fence as needed
  • General ranch maintenance like repairing/replacing corral boards, seeding, weed maintenance, salt lick movement, repair/maintenance of irrigation infrastructure; electric fence maintenance, etc.
  • Assisting in identifying sick or injured cattle; Feed hay to cattle herd during the winter months
  • Corralling escaped cattle back into fenced pastures

THE RIGHT CANDIDATE IS SOMEONE WHO:

  • Has an upbeat, can-do attitude and a willingness to learn; We’d rather hire on ability/attitude than experience
  • Is interested in the principles of regenerative agriculture, hay production, and low-stress livestock management
  • Has the physical ability to work long days of manual labor
  • Has a basic competence in mechanical troubleshooting; Most irrigation is done with wheel lines
  • Can create strong relationships with neighbors and other partners

ABOUT US:

Cabarton Ranch is located in Cascade, Idaho, about an hour south of the ski town of McCall. Our family runs a cow-calf herd that overwinters in Horseshoe Bend, where we operate a leased alfalfa farm. We have three generations at work on any given day, and pride ourselves on creating a positive work environment.

DETAILS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Work will start in mid-May. Work days are long during peak irrigation season, from May-September. Most days will average 6-8 hours of work, but some will be as long as 10. Fall is slow. Go to Mexico. Go hunting. Cows return to the ranch in early November, and that’s when you should be back, too.

Position includes a three-bedroom house and an ATV and ranch truck for on-farm use only. Tenant is responsible for internet, if desired.

Compensation is $2,400/month, payable monthly. For a couple, we’re open to increasing the wage so both persons get paid. There’s no smoking on ranch property.

This position is ideal for someone who wants to get their own thing started in agriculture and need a place to do it. The farm has room to accommodate employee’s animals or livestock — details to be negotiated. The farm is about 25 minutes north of Boise, Idaho, which has access to urban farmer’s markets if the employee wanted to run their own pastured meats business (or something). We’re also open to letting the employee run some of his or her cows with the family herd, if desired (and with a limit).

DEADLINE: March 15, 2024 (or open until filled)
