The Broken O Ranch is known across the farming and ranching community as one of the most grand and spectacular ranching operations of the west. This 136,000-acre operation lies in the backdrop of the Rocky Mountain Front and is home to one of the largest commercial cow herds in the United States. The iconic Sun River meanders for over 20 miles through the ranch, which is the primary irrigation source for 68 center pivots and 13 wheel lines on the ranch. Great Falls, Montana’s third largest city, is a comfortable 45-min drive the from the ranch HQ’s.

The Broken O carries approx. 3,900 mother cows, and has historically produced 15,000 to 20,000 tons of alfalfa hay each year. In addition, the ranch develops 1,500 heifers and 500 yearling bulls. The large irrigation base enables the ranch to produce approx. 450,000 bushels of small grains each year – which consists of spring wheat, durum wheat, barley and corn. Once the grains are harvested, a portion is hauled to the ranch’s 5,000 head commercial feedlot and fed to developing heifers and bulls, as well as other outside cattle.

The current ownership is very passionate about conservation and habitat preservation. The Broken O strives to manage operations in a way that benefits the overall ecology of the ranch. Additionally, there is a stream restoration crew that works to enhance fisheries across the ranch.
