We’re hiring a Blacksmith to Live. Work. Explore. at the south rim of the Grand Canyon!
Job Summary:
Conduct Farrier/Blacksmith operations.
The Details:
Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round
Pay: $18.90 per hour when not shoeing and $52.00 per mule when shoeing
Schedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)
Housing: Eligible for a private studio apartment; $267/month, payroll-deducted

Responsibilities
- Responsible for all appropriate blacksmith duties, primarily the shoeing of mules.
- Achieve average of 5-6 mules shod per day, 25-30 per week.
- Maintain the blacksmith shop in a clean safe and orderly fashion.
- Adhere to all safety and risk management policies and procedures.
- Wear all personal protective equipment required for the position.
- Maintain supply levels for blacksmith shop.
- Responsible for security of blacksmith shop, including fire safety.
- Overnight stays at Phantom Ranch may be required from time to time. Based on the mixed-gender nature of the Trail crews and limited employee housing at the bottom of the Canyon, employees may be required to share room accommodations with team members of the opposite sex. Employees will have access to gender-specific shower and restroom facilities, but will be expected to sleep in a co-ed bunk house.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Zero to three years minimum experience shoeing stock (manually).
- Must have own tools.
Physical Requirements:
Constantly: Sit, handle, reach, lift/carry up to 50lbs, push/pull up to 40lbs
Frequently: Stand, walk, reach, squat/kneel, bend, lift/carry up to 100lbs, push/pull up to 100lbs
Occasionally: Climb, crawl, lift/carry over 100lbs.
