Firlands Ranch Seeking a Full-Time Ranch Manager
The historic Firlands Ranch in the beautiful Columbia Valley is seeking a full-time Ranch Manager to care for our small herds of unique breeds of animals and keep our ranch functioning well and looking spectacular. Reporting directly to the owners of the Ranch (a mother and son team) you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Ranch.
Firlands was founded in the mid 1800’s and eventually acquired and developed by H.E. Forster, who left his indelible mark on the community. A large creek named after him runs through Firlands Ranch and the highest mountain peak, Forster Mountain stands guard like a sentry over the Ranch. Firlands, currently runs a small herd of full-blood Wagyu and is slowly expanding our operations. Genetics plays a large role in developing a successful Wagyu herd and our Ranch Manager must have a keen interest in the genetics of the animals. In addition to Wagyu, Firlands is in the process of expanding into cashmere goats, Mangalitsa pigs, ducks, chickens, turkeys, and sheep. Our footprint with each of these species will be small but impactful. Our Ranch Manager must know how to ranch – including, sowing and harvesting hay for feed, caring for the ranch equipment, the land and livestock and must have the ability and desire to learn about the care and upkeep of additional and in some cases exotic species of livestock.
Our Ranch Manager must also have an eye for detail and have initiative so as to be able to determine and attend to what needs attention or fixing around the ranch and the owners’ property without being told. The owners of the Firlands Ranch want to honor and preserve the beauty of the Ranch and the pristine nature of the land. If you want to be the Ranch Manager of this beautiful ranch and manage the day-to-day operations of this exciting opportunity, you must have the same desire to honor and preserve the land.
You will also be a collaborative in your approach to managing the Ranch, a good listener, respectful of and to your supervisors, peers, and subordinates. You will represent the Firlands Ranch in everything you do and in how you relate to people in the community. You will therefore act in a dignified manner at all times, considerate of the members of the community with whom you reside and courteous to those with whom you and we will do business. In turn you will have earned the autonomy to manage your work as you see best.
Your duties will include but are not limited to:
- Full responsibility for the day-to-day operation and administration of the Ranch;
- Caring for and breeding of livestock (and managing the genetics with an eye to maximizing the purity of the herd in an economic and practical manner) and administering to their day-to-day needs, their wellbeing and habitat;
- Keeping the grounds, buildings, and facilities exceedingly well-maintained;
- Supervising of occasional, seasonal or part time workers;
- Maintenance and improvement of the Ranch and execution or management of construction projects as required; and
- Providing an exceptional experience and all necessary support for the property owner, their family, and their guests as required.
And finally, you will exude the most important character trait – a passion for working hard and getting things done with a strong pride of workmanship.
Firlands ranch is our little piece of paradise, and we invite our Ranch Manager to share that with us. Accommodation on the ranch is provided to the Ranch Manager and their family while under our employment.
A clean background is a necessity.
Compensation includes full time salary, dental and health benefits and free accommodation of stand- alone three bedroom log home.
