Long-time Owners of private 50-acre horse property near Carbondale seek a full-time (or part-time), on-staff, experienced Horse and Barn Caretaker to perform the following functions:
- Feed horses (currently 5 retired show horses)
- Administer medications
- Groom horses
- Put horses on the hotwalker
- Clean auto waters outside and inspect pastures to ensure safety
- Clean stalls
- Add new bedding and hay amount
- Clean horse runs and rake them
- Rinse wheelbarrows and muck tub
- Rake and clean the hotwalker
- Fill horse waters
- Sweep all walkways
- Sweep the floors and wipe off counters in grain room
- Pick horses’ hooves, apply thrush buster
- Vacuum barn
- Organize monthly receipts
Spring Chores:
- Pull weeds around perimeter of the arena and round pen
- Pick up rocks in pastures
- Sweep bridges/rake gravel pathways
- Wash inside stall walls
- Dust and wash stall fronts
- Dust tack room/clean tack/organize tack room
- Clean hoof boots/store
- Organize hay barn
- Give horses a bath if muddy
- Deep clean horses’ brushes
- Clean up manure
- Schedule spring vaccinations for horses
Fall Chores:
- Bring down rain sheets and blankets
- Order ice melt
- Once the weather calls for it, turn on heat in barn — between 48-52 degrees Fahrenheit
- Store any summer items
- Clean fly masks, tack, etc.
- Bring in all hoses around the property
- Schedule fall vaccinations
The property is private and not used for any commercial enterprise of any kind. Candidates must have 3-5 years’ equine experience (a college degree in equine science is a plus) and have a “no job too big or too small” attitude, enjoy working in a rural area and possess long-term intent. Great 8am-4pm hours. Excellent compensation & benefits package for full-time position.
Salary: Full-time: $65K-$75K – DOE & medical/dental/vision & 401k. Part-time: Pro-rata hourly, no benefits
