Ride, camp, and explore the amazing Eagle Cap Wilderness and Wallowa Mountains in Oregon as a Counselor for Wilderness Horse Camp.

At Wilderness Horse Camp, we share our love of the outdoors and horses with girls ages 12-17. Every day is spent riding in the amazing Wallowa Mountains and Eagle Cap Wilderness areas. Our campers are always amazed at this one-of-a-kind camp that allows them to experience the backcountry, western riding, camping and crafts, all while learning about horses and making life-long friendships and memories. We limit camp size to 12 girls to ensure safety and encourage a more intimate experience.

We offer three types of camps over the course of 6-8 weeks. The Saddle Club is a 4-day camp for novice riders, ages 12-14 and focuses on building confidence and knowledge. Wilderness Horse Camp is 7 days and is for intermediate and advanced riders and spends more time on the trail and teaching backcountry and Leave No Trace skills. Our Mother-Daughter weekend allows Mothers, Aunts or Grandmothers to spend 3 days with their camper and enjoy riding and camp life.

The girls are taught to prepare their own meals as well as keeping camp clean & orderly. They catch, brush & saddle their own horses and also provide all care. Camp is set up in the style of a back-country camp, with wall tents as sleeping tents and cook tent. There is also a real bathroom and shower in the secluded location.

While teaching basic camp cooking, proper horse care, etiquette, and trail riding, and general backcountry and Leave-No-Trace skills is a full-time job, you will be rewarded by the exuberance and joy the girls bring to the camp. Additionally, many long-term relationships are forged as you leave an indelible mark on their youth.

We are willing to train for the specific tasks related to the position, but the successful applicant will have the following demonstrable skills:
• General First Aid
• Western and Trail Riding knowledge
• Basic Horse care and knowledge
• Basic Camping / Backcountry skills
• Must be comfortable in the woods / backcountry

Other skills / experience that would be bonus, but not required may include:
• Previous Camp Counselor experience
• Experience with overnight backcountry camping, hiking, riding
• Vet / Horse First Aid
• Craft / Art
• Music (singing, guitar, etc)
• Flora / Fauna knowledge

Start date is on or about June 20th (although we can often offer an earlier date should a successful candidate want to start sooner) and runs until about August 25th (MUST be willing to stay until at least this date). Pay is DOE. Both a Head Counselor and Assistant Counselor will be hired. The Head Counselor is responsible for the girls’ safety, first and foremost, followed by instruction of the above noted skills. The Assistant Counselor is instrumental in helping with all aspects of the camp, and may also be called upon to help with other aspect of the Pack Station operation (i.e., day rides). All rides will have both counselors along. Counselors will report directly to Pack Station Managers who will provide training and guidelines for the camp.
