The Guide and Habitat Specialist will be an integral member of the McGraw Outdoor Recreation and Habitat team. The primary job responsibilities include guiding upland hunts, guiding clay target shoots, assisting with kennel operations including dog training and handling, and overall habitat maintenance and stewardship.

Position purpose of the Guide and Habitat Specialist:

  • The position is responsible for providing exceptional member service while supporting McGraw’s hunting, shooting, land stewardship, and habitat management operations. This position is responsible for learning, and consistently executing McGraw’s standards, procedures, and safety practices for hunting parties and clay target shooting activities. The position will also develop proficiency in Range Master responsibilities for the Clay Target Center and archery/air gun range.
  • In addition to member-facing responsibilities, this position supports the ongoing management and stewardship of McGraw’s property and natural resources. Responsibilities include farming, habitat maintenance, land stewardship, food plot and hunting cover establishment and maintenance, brush cutting and trimming, planting and seeding, weed control, prescribed burning, and the application of industry best practices in habitat and land management.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to assist in other departments and operational areas as needed, work collaboratively with the McGraw team, prioritize safety, and consistently provide a high level of service that exceeds members’ expectations.

Guide & Habitat Specialist responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

Farming & Habitat 

  • Assist with planting, maintaining, and managing annual food plots and hunting cover to support doves, upland birds, waterfowl, deer, and other wildlife species, consistent with established habitat management plans.
  • Perform weed and invasive plant control through chemical applications in accordance with applicable state and federal requirements, chemical applicator regulations, and best management practices for natural areas.
  • Assist with harvesting remaining agricultural crops as needed, with agricultural production serving as a secondary objective to the establishment and maintenance of quality wildlife food and cover.

Non-crop and woodland management

  • Assist with managing large- and small-scale brush, invasive species, and native woody vegetation to maintain healthy and desirable habitat conditions.
  • Participate in prescribed burns in accordance with established management plans, safety protocols, and applicable regulations.
  • Help to protect, enhance, and promote biodiversity across McGraw’s unique ecological communities, including fens, wetlands, savannas, woodlands, and other natural habitats.
  • Apply sound land management practices to preserve and enhance the ecological health, diversity, and long-term sustainability of McGraw’s natural resources.

Maintenance

  • Assist with the maintenance, upkeep, and repair of the general farm buildings, including both interior and exterior areas, as well as surrounding grounds and landscape.
  • Assist with the maintenance, inspection, and repair of farming, habitat management, and other land management equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment and promptly report maintenance or equipment issues requiring additional attention.

Other

  • Available and willing to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and other non-traditional hours as operational needs require.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to assist in other departments and operational areas as needed, including supporting the Outdoor Education team.
