63 Ranch is seeking a capable, organized, hands-on Land & Livestock Foreman to oversee the daily care, management, and long-term stewardship of the ranch’s livestock, horses, grazing lands, Forest Service grazing leases, fencing, water systems, trails, tack, pack equipment, and related ranch infrastructure.

This is a working leadership position for someone who can ride, handle cattle, manage horses, fix fence, think through grazing decisions, supervise seasonal help, and keep a ranch moving in the right direction without needing constant oversight.

The right candidate will understand that 63 Ranch is both a rugged 2,000 acre working ranch, private hospitality property with an parcel of +16,000 acres of deeded forest service land for grazing. The ranch must be productive, safe, clean, organized, guest-aware, and managed with care for the land, livestock, horses, facilities, and long-term business value.

Key Responsibilities

The Land & Livestock Foreman will be responsible for:

Daily care, monitoring, and movement of cattle
Grazing rotation, pasture use, and responsible livestock management
Forest Service grazing lease support, including acreage, access, facilities, fencing, water, trails, and range infrastructure
Horse care, herd rotation, horse condition, workload management, and long-term horse planning
Supporting the development of young horses and the introduction of 1 to 2 new colts per year into the ranch program
Maintaining and organizing tack, saddles, bridles, horse gear, and pack equipment
Supporting future pack trip and backcountry opportunities
Maintaining two Forest Service spike camps
Prioritizing trail maintenance and directing seasonal staff on trail-related work
Inspecting and repairing fences, gates, corrals, H-braces, water systems, and related infrastructure
Identifying opportunities for improved water sources, pasture divisions, and other ranch improvements
Operating ranch equipment, trucks, trailers, UTVs, tractors, implements, chainsaws, post pounders, and hand tools as qualified
Keeping barns, tack rooms, work areas, equipment areas, and high-visibility ranch spaces clean, safe, and organized
Supervising seasonal ranch hands and ranch support staff as assigned
Communicating clearly with the General Manager and ownership before small problems become large ones

Ranching for Profit Mindset

63 Ranch is looking for someone who understands that good ranching requires practical business thinking. Land, livestock, labor, equipment, infrastructure, grazing timing, and stocking decisions all affect the bottom line.

Experience with ranch profitability principles, grazing economics, or a Ranching for Profit-style program is a strong plus, but not required.

Horse and Backcountry Experience

Strong horsemanship is important for this role. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing a working horse string, identifying soundness or disposition issues, helping develop young horses, maintaining tack and pack gear, and preparing horses for ranch work, guest-facing use, or future pack operations.

Basic farrier skills are strongly preferred, including the ability to tack a shoe back on, pull a shoe when needed, or prepare an extra horse or two to be added to the working string.

Experience with pack trips, backcountry stock use, Forest Service camps, trail work, or ranch cow dogs is a plus.

Required Qualifications

Direct experience with cattle, horses, fencing, and ranch operations
Strong horsemanship and practical livestock handling ability
Experience with grazing rotation, pasture use, fence repair, gates, and water systems
Ability to work independently and prioritize daily ranch needs
Comfortable working outdoors in changing weather and seasonal conditions
Physically capable of hands-on ranch work, riding, lifting, fencing, walking uneven terrain, and operating tools and equipment
Strong communication skills
Valid driver’s license
Reliable, organized, self-motivated, and safety-minded
Willingness and ability to live on property

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Forest Service grazing leases or permitted grazing areas
Experience maintaining spike camps, trails, or backcountry facilities
Experience with pack equipment, pack trips, or backcountry horse and mule work
Experience starting colts or developing young horses
Basic farrier skills
Experience supervising seasonal ranch staff
Mechanical aptitude and basic equipment troubleshooting ability
Experience with weed control, water development, pasture improvement, or land stewardship
Experience with ranch cow dogs
Familiarity with ranch profitability principles or Ranching for Profit-style training

Housing and Schedule

Housing is provided and is a required part of this role.

This is a live-on-property position because of livestock care, weather events, fence or water issues, and ranch emergency response. The Land & Livestock Foreman is expected to be one of the first calls for ranch-related emergencies.

Schedule will vary based on livestock needs, horse care, grazing activity, weather, Forest Service use, guest activity, special projects, and seasonal workload. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, and extended days may be required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is practical, steady, organized, and observant. They can ride, fix fence, move cattle, manage horses, keep gear organized, lead seasonal staff, and communicate clearly with the General Manager and ownership.

This person takes pride in healthy animals, clean work areas, safe fences, working water systems, organized tack, functional equipment, and a ranch that looks cared for.

They are proactive rather than reactive. They understand when to manage up, make a decisions, when to ask questions, and when to bring an issue forward.

90-Day Assessment

Within the first 90 days, the Land & Livestock Foreman will provide ownership and management with a written assessment of ranch conditions and priorities, including livestock, horses, grazing, fencing, water systems, tack, equipment, trails, spike camps, labor needs, and recommended improvements.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means the ranch is noticeably more organized, livestock and horses are well cared for, horses are being brought along for useful work, fences and water systems are actively maintained, tack and equipment are clean and organized, seasonal staff have direction, and ownership has a clear understanding of priorities before problems become emergencies.
