The ranch operates under a 1-D-1 (open space) Agricultural Use Appraisal and Wildlife Management Plan (“the wildlife management plan” or “the plan”). Owners, lessees and employees work to deliver against the targets in the wildlife management plan, both in letter and spirit. While the plan sets out specific objectives and deliverables, the goal of all parties in managing the property remains unchanged over generations the past 90 years: to preserve the ecosystem in the Blanco River valley for the use and enjoyment of future generations.
The Foreman’s role is the most visible and active in delivering against the four practices captured in the wildlife management plan covering approx 1000 acres:
1. Habitat Control – manage contractor in removing seedlings over approx. 200 acres annually
2. Predator Control – control invasive species as follows:
- Apply product annually to control fire ants over a 50-acre area
- Support removal of feral hogs and coyotes (ad hoc / continuous)
3. Supplemental Water – ensure availability at all times as follows:
- Maintain 4 existing wells
- Maintain 13 troughs, including facilitating water access for native species
4. Census – track incidental sightings of certain species (deer, turkey, hogs) for incorporation into overall census counts
In addition to the above, the Forman will spend approx 20 hours per week (days/times flexible) to manage and deliver the following:
- Road maintenance / repairs – keep main access roads clear and passable; run road blade over heavily travelled roads annually
- Building and equipment maintenance – coordinate, manage and/or perform maintenance on barn, gate house, tractor shed, wells, troughs, truck, tractor, riding mower and other ranch equipment per manufacturer’s maintenance schedule or as required
- Fence maintenance / repairs – focus on perimeter fencing and signage with the intent to keep property lines clear and deter trespassers
- Bamboo – cut back rhizomes/roots at plastic bamboo barriers (2 barriers, each 100 yards long) and treat those sites with herbicide (quarterly)
- Mowing – maintain approx 2 acres areas around buildings, along major roads, and several other high-use areas (quarterly)
- Represent the operation in dealings with third parties, authorities and members of the community
- Maintain a material onsite presence to actively identify and manage situations/risks as they arise – housing provided (1BR/1BA house at property entrance)
A successful candidate will possess the following skills and attributes:
- 5 – 10 years site management experience
- Ability and willingness to operate heavy machinery (e.g., tractor) as required
- Basic skillset in carpentry, small engine repair, welding and related trades relevant to ranch operations
- Growth mindset – open to learning new tools/techniques based on industry best practices
- Strong moral fiber – willing to “do the right thing” at all times
