Position Title: Part-Time Ranch Hand
Location: Prickly Pear Ridge, Gillespie County, TX
Reports To: Ranch Manager / Owner
Hours: Part-time (5-10 hours/week, flexible depending on season and needs)
Compensation: $18-24 per hour; rate based on experience
Position Overview:
The Part-Time Ranch Hand is responsible for assisting in the regular upkeep and monitoring of a private, non-commercial, family-owned 900-acre ranch. Duties include ranch work, ranch facility maintenance, light equipment upkeep, livestock care, and general assistance with readiness. This role is essential for keeping the ranch in good working order.
Key Responsibilities:
Property & Infrastructure Maintenance
- Inspect and maintain gates, fences and cattle guards
- Mow and clear brush near homes, roads, and water tanks
- Assist with storm cleanup and seasonal prep (e.g., winterizing)
- Road maintenance with tractor
Home & Pool Area
- Check buildings for leaks, pests, or damage
- Run water through plumbing fixtures and flush toilets weekly
- Clean, monitor and maintain pool and equipment (training provided)
Equipment & Vehicles
- Maintain ranch vehicles (Polaris Ranger, Jeep, F150 and John Deere tractor); operate safely
- Check fluids, battery health, and tire pressure
- Clean and report any issues needing repair
Water & Well Systems
- Monitor well pumps, water storage tanks, and pressure systems
- Check and refill water softener salt as needed
Livestock & Wildlife Support
- Perform basic health checks and headcounts on cattle
- Regular feeding and ensure access to clean water
- Report signs of injury, illness, or fencing issues
- Fill and maintain wildlife feeders
General Support
- Prepare property for owner visits (lights on, A/C running, vehicles fueled)
- Meet with service providers or vendors when scheduled
- Pick up feed and ranch supplies from local vendors
- Keep a task log and provide weekly updates with photos if needed
Qualifications:
- Prior ranch, farm, or outdoor maintenance experience preferred
- Basic plumbing, electrical and mechanical knowledge
- Comfortable around livestock and ranch equipment
- Knowledge of fire safety, other ranch hazards and comfortable responding to wildlife issues
- Self-motivated and reliable with strong attention to detail
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to tow trailers preferred
- Ability to lift 70 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions
