My name is Robert, and I’m a dependable, hard-working ranch hand seeking a long-term position. My wife and I’s preferred areas are northern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming, and southwestern Nebraska, but we’re willing to consider opportunities elsewhere for the right operation and fit. My preference is a family-owned cow-calf operation, though I’m open to feedlots and other cattle operations. More than anything, my wife and I are looking for a place to put down roots, become part of a community, and commit for the long haul.
Experience includes:
- One of two ranch hands who shared responsibility for the day-to-day operation of a contiguous ranch unit supporting 1,000+ cow-calf pairs within a larger noncontiguous ranching operation.
- Calving experience with 2,400 cows, including 450 heifers.
- Herd health, sorting, processing, doctoring, feeding, and general cattle handling.
- Horseback gathering, moving, and checking cattle; committed to continuing to improve my horsemanship and stockmanship.
- Fencing, water systems, corrals, pasture management, equipment operation, and general ranch maintenance.
- Strong believer in Bud Williams’ low-stress stockmanship principles and have attended Whit Hibbard stockmanship clinics to further develop those skills.
I’m particularly interested in an outfit where horses are still an important part of working cattle and where I can continue developing as a horseman. I understand every job doesn’t need to be done horseback, though, and have no problem using an ATV/UTV or equipment when it’s the practical tool for the job.
I also bring 10 years of leadership experience as a commissioned Army officer and currently serve in the Montana Army National Guard. I’m adaptable, comfortable with responsibility and willing to learn. I want to continue improving my horsemanship, stockmanship, cattle knowledge, and overall skill set while earning greater responsibility over time.
Just as important as the work itself is finding the right operation and team. I value a healthy, cohesive work environment built on mutual respect, honesty, communication, teamwork, and accountability. I’m willing to work hard, step up when needed, and take ownership of my responsibilities, and I’m looking for an employer who recognizes that commitment and treats employees with the same respect and loyalty expected from them. I also value an operation with strong ethical and moral principles, one that takes care of its land, livestock, and people and has earned the respect of its neighbors and community.
My wife and I are Christians, and being able to attend church regularly is important to us. We’re also planning to start a family, so finding a sustainable work-life balance is important. I fully understand ranching isn’t a 9-to-5 job and that calving, haying, shipping, and other busy seasons require long days and extra hours. I’m willing to put those hours in when the work demands it; we’re looking for an operation that also values family and a sustainable lifestyle when the workload allows.
Ultimately, we’re looking for a place to put down roots, contribute to the operation, and be part of the community long-term.
