Hi, I would love to help you run your ranch, if you’d have me.

By way of the briefest possible introduction, I’ve spent a dozen years sitting at a desk to pay off a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, and now I’m looking to move on. To that end, I’ve spent the past several months devoting a great deal of time and money to advanced horsemanship training under a lifelong rancher-turned-outfitter here in New Mexico, and have recently begun assisting him with his client rides. I’m already booked to help him out on a number of pack trips through August, so I will not be able to consider a move prior to that date, nor would I want to leave my current employer without giving them several months of notice and some assistance in hiring a replacement. But I wanted to place this ad sooner than later, and if the fit is right hopefully we can wait for our schedules to align somewhere around Labor Day or thereafter.

I’m looking for a very long-term commitment, but I’m flexible on the nature of the work; I think I would be ideally suited to a wrangler position, and I’m also an avid fly fisherman, which I mention because I have seen instances where wrangling and guiding overlap. I would also be more than happy cooking for guests, if the role so required; I’ve worked in restaurants on and off for many years as a side gig so I’m no stranger to hospitality. I should also note that I have some amount of training in emergency medicine as well and hold a current Wilderness First Responder certification, which you may find of value on backcountry pack trips. Regardless, if I can’t already do it, but you’re willing to train someone who wants to stick around, then I wouldn’t want anything to be off the table. The only thing I would ask is for horses to be an integral part of the day-to-day.

I’m willing to move anywhere in the intermountain West, though as you might imagine fly fishing access is paramount, as would proximity to the sort of community I could see myself wanting to put down roots in. I can live in employee housing or put myself up, either way, though for full disclosure in the former case I would come with a 35-lb rescue pup as part of the package.

Phone number below is a Google Voice account, to save my mobile number from being indexed on the internet, so while I can’t answer it I can receive voicemails there and will get back to you promptly.
