Dan S.
(June, July, August)
Hello!
I am a college student studying agriculture at Berea College as well as a part-time farm hand for the school’s work-study program. I am seeking a full-time ranch work position from about June 14 to August 15.
The majority of my experience is with cattle, as my family owns a ranch in Kentucky, but I have experience with poultry and hogs as well. I am primarily interested in continuing to work with cattle or other ruminants (goats & sheep), but I am open to most work involving livestock.
I have taken classes focused on the topics of animal science and reproduction, and have completed the Master Cattlemen program offered through University of Kentucky’s cooperative extension service. Last summer, I participated in a research project studying the reproductive performance of our yearling heifers.
On my college’s farm, I am part of the student management team for the cattle herd. My duties include:
- Updating herd records (Farmbrite and Microsoft Excel)
- Training new students on various farm chores
- Checking animal health and wellness
- Feeding hay/haylage
- Moving and working animals with low-stress handling
- Setting up fields for rotational grazing
- Observation during calving season
I also have some experience with rectal palpation and transrectal ultrasound. I was trained as an English rider with a Western seat/riding position, so I would be open to learning the basics of Western riding if a horseback opportunity was available. I’m a strong believer in the value and dignity of hard work and I consider myself even-tempered under stressful conditions. I am an open communicator and a problem-solver.
I am looking to apply the skills I have learned both in class and on the farm in a different environment, as well as learn new skills to become a more well-rounded worker. For example, I have experience operating tractors for feeding hay, but I have not done any field work in them and would be very interested in learning how to use the various implements required.
There is some communication required with the college in approving the internship with faculty and sending timesheets, but it is not extensive. I can explain the process in more detail if needed. I can be provided with funding through the college if the position is unpaid. Housing would be a plus for me, but not an expectation. I’m located in Kentucky, but willing to move anywhere; I have a truck that I can use as a work vehicle as well.
My resume is available by request. I look forward to hearing from you!
