Caretaker, Renegade Property
Are you someone who feels more settled with a mountain at your back than a crowd around you? We’re looking for a Caretaker to live on and look after an 80-acre off-grid property near Alpine, Wyoming, one of several properties under Hugo Wyoming Management, including White Pine Ski Resort. You’ll live on-site in a provided tiny house powered by off-grid solar, and take real ownership of the land: its security, its infrastructure, and the work each season brings.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Maintain and repair fencing, water systems, and other property infrastructure.
- Keep a visible presence that deters trespassers, and handle them calmly if they show up.
- Manage vegetation, ditch drainage, and grounds around wells and valves.
- Help winterize and de-winterize water systems each year.
- Watch for cattle encroaching in summer and fall, coordinating with neighboring ranchers as needed.
- Use a snowmobile to access and check the property through winter.
- Stay alert to hazards and emergencies given how remote the property is.
THIS DESCRIBES YOU
You’re comfortable being the only person around and don’t need much company to feel content. You’re handy and self-reliant, the type to fix a problem yourself rather than wait on someone else. You think ahead about weather and terrain instead of getting caught off guard by them, and you stay level-headed if something goes wrong.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds and do physical work outdoors in all weather.
- Experience with property maintenance, fencing, and basic repairs.
- Comfort and confidence operating a snowmobile.
- A valid driver’s license and a clean background check.
- Real willingness to live on-site, off-grid, full time.
- Preferred: knowledge of water/irrigation systems, off-grid or solar experience, prior rural Wyoming work, or first aid/CPR certification.
NOT A FIT IF
- You rely on regular social contact or steady cell/internet service to feel settled.
- Long winters and short daylight wear on you rather than suit you.
- You’re not comfortable being the only one responsible when something goes wrong.
COMPENSATION & DETAILS
- $30,000 per year, plus on-site housing (tiny house with off-grid solar) provided at no cost.
- Health insurance and a 401(k).
- PTO accrues over the course of employment.
- Full-time, live-on-site. Reports to the Director of Maintenance.
