Farm hand wanted on farm/ranch in central Montana. We raise cattle and wheat and have around 100 head of cows. We also do our own haying. This is a small-scale operation and we use older equipment. We are seeking an “all around” farm hand. This is not strictly a cowboy job.
Work varies by season, and can include but is not limited to: haying, maintenance of buildings and equipment, seeding, spraying, fixing and building fence (often by foot or horseback), moving and checking cows, calving, banding and tagging calves, harvesting grain, yard work, mowing, cleaning barns and outbuildings, spreading manure, and other general ranch chores.
All year round there is maintenance, fencing, cattle and animal care, yard work, and all the other jobs that go with a farm/ranch. You will be asked to perform menial tasks, most of which cannot be done by horseback. If you do not want to clean a barn by hand or mow a yard, this is not the right job.
Some work, such as moving and checking cattle and some fencing, will be done by horseback, so basic riding ability is very strongly preferred. However, riding is only a small part of the job.
The ranch is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco free workplace. Hunting and fishing is not allowed on ranch property, nor is harm to wildlife.
Wages are negotiable and depend on experience.
This is not an internship or management position. Recent experience in farming and ranching is preferred. The ideal candidate will be responsible and trustworthy, have a good attitude, and be willing to take direction and work alone or with others.
