SITUATION
Seeking a Ranch/Farm Manager for a horticultural nursery pivoting into a hay growing and grass-fed calf/cow operation. Over 180 acres, many broken into 2-5 acre pieces with arborvitae windbreaks, with strong in-ground irrigation infrastructure and six diesel pumps. Over 40 acres have been planted for pasture, primarily timothy/clover mixes.
Looking for a person with cattle experience to help design and build receiving, sorting, grazing, and shelter areas into the property; begin cow/calf operations with an eventual goal of 60 head on site. Direct-to-consumer sales is the logical outlet, but wholesale avenues will be explored as well. Run day to day operations with the assistance of part time office staff and full time field crews.
SKILLS / EXPERIENCE WANTED
- Ability to lead multiple crews, communicating in Spanish and English.
- Experience in herd movement/control between pastures. Possible movement twice a week.
- Experience building traditional wood fences, electric fence, ‘tumbleweeds’.
- Tractor operation, including hay related baling, mowing, raking.
- Basic Plumbing Repair skills, particularly PVC glue fittings, gasketed bell end fittings.
- Property maintenance abilities, oversight of barns, shops, greenhouses, and worker housing.
- Operation of diesel irrigation pumps, and systems, including Amadas Reel Rains and 4” aluminum move pipe.
- Basic computer skills, in terms of emailing, texting photos, and record keeping.
- Automotive and Equipment repair experience, to at least the level of performing oil and filter changes, starter and battery replacements, bleeding air from diesel systems. Wheel removal to send out for tire repairs and replacements. Ability to diagnose and determine when to call-in higher-level mechanics.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE SKILLS
- Welding experience (steel, with AC stick welders) a plus.
- Nursery or Farm experience a plus, as nursery stock digging, and possible container potting operations will continue for the next two years.
- ‘NoFence’ or similar cattle control experience.
- Higher level of Automotive and Equipment repair experience, replacing complex assemblies, electrical wiring repairs including proper splicing techniques, hydraulic hose building and replacement, electrical motor diagnosis (at least clamp on meter amp readings of live equipment).
- Higher level Plumbing Repair skills, experience with curb stops and winterization, using a trailer mounted compressor to blow out water lines, lawn sprinkler controls, wiring, and solenoid valves. Occasional soldering of copper pipe. Repairs on saddle tees, and valves: and pipes and fittings from ¼” brass to 6” steel and PVC.
- Backhoe, skid steer, articulated loader experience.
- Sprayer, spreader and pesticide application experience, especially if container operations continue. Grounds outside cattle operations would still see weed controls applied for the next two years.
LOCATION
Jamesport, NY is located on the Eastern end of Long Island. Yes, I know how repulsive the words “New York” can sound put together, but this is still a somewhat rural holdout despite being less than 100 miles from New York City. The property is surrounded by other nurseries, vineyards, and farmland. Plenty of boating and fishing opportunities are less than 10 minutes away. The farm is one of the last without deer fence, so large bucks, turkey, and other wildlife are seen daily.
