Duties

Herd and crew management

  • Manage and attend to the herd daily, manage feeding, calving at grow yard
  • Manage employees, working alongside cattle hands on daily herd and facility tasks
  • Organize scheduling and duties for each employee, and perform those duties as needed to meet operational demands
  • Manage, maintain, and perform routine upkeep of facilities, equipment, and fences
  • Oversee and carry out all weaning and movement of cattle between circles, native pastures, and grow yard

Herd health and reproduction

  • Manage herd health and reproduction, including personally performing reproductive and health procedures as needed
  • Design and execute weaning, vaccination, and mineral programs suited to each group of cattle
  • Organize and carry out embryo transfer and artificial insemination procedures

Embryo and recipient cow program

  • Provide and manage all recipient cows used in the embryo program
  • Administer CIDRs and heat-synchronization drugs to recipient cows
  • Coordinate and perform all breeding and post-embryo-transfer care
  • Pregnancy-test all recipients at approximately 60 days following embryo transfer, using an ultrasound technician approved by the embryologist

Calving and calf production

  • Weigh and record birth weights of all calves, and dehorn calves at an early age
  • Identify all calves at birth with individual ear tags and recorded date of birth
  • Provide creep feed, vaccinations (minimum two complete rounds, e.g. Ultrabac 7 and Virashield 6, or equivalent protocol), and deworming for all calves per standard veterinary protocol
  • Complete the 45-day pre-conditioning program for calves following weaning
  • Weigh all embryo bull calves (and any embryo heifer calves) upon completion of weaning and preconditioning, between 170 and 260 days of age, and provide average weights

Requirements

  • Hands-on artificial insemination and embryo transfer experience required
  • 10+ years of cattle production, ranch, or livestock operation experience, with supervisory experience
  • Working knowledge of recipient cow programs, CIDR/synchronization protocols, and breeding procedures
  • Experience running vaccination, weaning, and preconditioning programs
  • Ability to manage a crew and schedule while performing hands-on work directly
  • Ability to operate ranch equipment and vehicles for daily pasture and herd checks
  • Valid driver’s license, CDL a plus
  • Available for early mornings, weekends, and on-call hours during calving and embryo season

Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry up to 75 lbs regularly
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Work directly with and restrain livestock during breeding, embryo transfer, calving, and weaning procedures
  • Drive trucks, UTVs, and/or horseback for extended periods across all pastures
  • Work extended and irregular hours based on herd and breeding-cycle demands
