The ranch foreman leads daily operations to build a profitable livestock business in balance with the surrounding ecosystem. This hands-on role involves caring for livestock (cattle and bison), maintaining and building infrastructure, while supporting native wildlife and plants through regenerative practices. You will work closely with the ranch manager and ownership to design and implement projects across the 10,000 acre ranch.

We’re looking for someone who is open-minded, curious, collaborative, and driven. Someone who strives to develop a holistic understanding of a problem space and actively seeks out both traditional and new solutions to problems. They’re especially energized by regenerative agriculture principles and low-stress livestock management. The ideal candidate has the ability and desire to grow into the ranch manager role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with cattle and bison operations, including daily care (grazing, herding, watering, feeding) in alignment with regenerative ag practices and low-stress handling methods.
  • Maintain paddocks and ranch fencing, including high-tensile electric fence, portable electric fencing, and barbed wire.
  • Assist with road repairs and general maintenance across the ranch.
  • Operate ranch equipment, including ATVs, trucks, and tractors.
  • Seasonally manage flood irrigation systems.
  • Sort, haul, and handle livestock for tagging, vaccinations, and finishing programs.
  • Collaborate with the Ranch Manager and ownership to develop and execute livestock strategies, infrastructure improvements, and sustainable practices.
  • Implement and uphold safety protocols, ensuring compliance with ranch policies and holistic management principles.
  • Apply herbicide as needed using tractors/ATVs to manage pasture health and invasive species. Develop practices to reduce the need for chemical controls.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant ranch experience including at least 1 year managing 100+ animals.
  • Excellent stockmanship using low-stress handling techniques and comfort moving animals using multiple methods: ATV, on foot, and/or horseback.
  • Experienced in pasture care using Holistic Management and/or Regenerative Agriculture best practices.
  • Able to monitor and address animal health issues.
  • Able to safely operate heavy machinery, including ATVs, trucks, dozers, and bobcats.
  • Capable of working independently; self-motivated and reliable.
  • Physically able to work outdoors on uneven, slippery terrain in varying weather conditions, with exposure to dust and allergens. Able to lift up to 100 Ibs. and perform physical tasks such as twisting, bending, kneeling, climbing, hiking up and down steep hills, and using hand tools.
  • Strong communication skills, team-oriented, and adaptable to changes throughout the day.
  • Hungry to learn and grow. Willing to try new things and carefully monitor their impact.
  • Willing to check on livestock occasionally on the weekends.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States and a valid driver’s license.

Compensation Package

Career growth is a core benefit of this role. We will need to backfill the Ranch Manager role in a few years, and we hope to promote the Foreman into the Manager role.

  • This is a full-time role with an annual salary between $40,000 and $60,000.
  • Housing is provided and utilities are covered by the ranch.
  • Annual bonus based on outcomes achieved.
  • 10 days of paid time in addition to rotating federal holidays.
  • Ability to harvest 1 deer or 1/2 a cattle or bison each year.
  • Work truck provided for work tasks.
  • Continuing education costs covered up to $2k per year.
