As a successful small family-owned start-up, we are more-than-doubling our size and need an individual to work under our guidance and supervision to eventually take over the management of our operation. Though experience handling farm animals and doing general ranch and land work would be preferred, these are not required qualifications as we are willing to provide on-the-job training for the right candidate. However, do not apply if you are not:

  • a true hard worker willing to perform manual work on a daily basis, outdoors, in the extreme hot/cold Hill Country weather,
  • willing to learn from others even if you think you already know,
  • thorough – “good enough” work is not acceptable,
  • and local, as you must be able to arrive within 45 minutes in case of an emergency.

Our expectation is that the person who we hire will be ready to manage the ranch within two years: i.e., independent (able to self-manage and prioritize the animal and farm responsibilities described below) and proactive (have a vision for improvements and propose projects to the owners).

This will be a full-time job once the candidate satisfactorily completes a three month probationary period that will begin part-time.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Animal care:
Follow instructions from supervisor and learn to eventually be self-sufficient in the following:

  • Rotate animals between pastures
  • Tag, chip and castrate
  • Feed and doctor animals and keep electronic records
  • Assess for breeding timing, attend birthing animals, weaning, monitor growing and handling new born animals
  • Monitor health of animals, care for or arrange for care if there are any health concerns, and maintain detailed electronic records
  • Keep detailed electronic record of and manage dead animals
  • Ensure protection of animals in cold/hot weather and before/after birthing
  • Preserve the ranch’s animal-friendly treatment operating philosophy

Farm care:
Follow instructions from supervisor and learn to eventually be self-sufficient in the following:

  • Build, monitor for damage and maintain fences, animal pens and water systems
  • Monitor for damage and maintain clean and in good shape barns, facilities and machinery
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, machinery, tools electronically
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as needed, and maintain electronic records
  • Maintain roads clear and in general good condition
  • Clear and maintain fields
  • Coordinate ranch growth/improvement projects
  • Build ranch structures, such as facilities, fences, drainage systems, wells, or roads.

Qualifications

  • Some experience handling farm animals and doing general ranch and land work
  • Able to maintain records electronically (must be able to use MSExcel and MSWord)
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Able to perform daily outdoor manual labor regardless of weather conditions
  • Able to attend birthing regardless of time of day (or night). Birthing happens twice annually.
  • Able to follow direction from supervisor

Other requirements

  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record, no criminal record or outstanding warrants, and drug free.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and periodic drug tests
  • Must provide references
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be able and willing to do physical work outdoors on a daily basis regardless of weather conditions
  • Must live in Johnson City or close vicinity
  • Dependable – able to arrive when expected, and to complete projects with no direct supervision
  • Flexible schedule with ability to respond to critical needs in a timely manner
  • Organized and attentive to details
  • Love for animals

Candidates with these additional qualifications will be prioritized:

  • Fence construction and maintenance
  • Machine repair and handyman skills
  • Able to operate and perform general maintenance of ranch equipment
