Cow/calf and yearling operation in northeastern New Mexico high plains / Sangre de Cristo Mountain foothills seeking long-term, well-rounded ranch employee with a focus on infrastructure maintenance and development. Job requires flexibility, independence, communication, ability to follow plans and adjust priorities as needed, and willingness to work together. The ranch is 120,000 deeded acres, at 6,000’-9,000’ elevation, running approximately 1,000 spring-calving mother cows plus additional yearlings. Cattle are managed according to a grazing plan, following a modest rotation, and fed minimal protein supplement. All cattle work is done by horseback. The cattle operation has a long-term lease from the landowners. Located approximately one hour north of Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Start date: Fall 2026, position open until filled
Responsibilities
- Maintaining ranch infrastructure, water systems, vehicles, buildings, and equipment
- Building and maintaining fences – barbed wire and electric
- Checking cattle, forage, water, fences
- Feeding cattle salt/mineral, protein supplement, and hay as needed
- Communicating and coordinating with rest of crew
- Handling cattle on horseback – gathering, moving, doctoring, weaning, processing, shipping
Required Qualifications
- Experience welding/fabricating/basic construction/mechanical repairs
- Experience operating equipment – skidsteer, backhoe, loader
- Experience building and maintaining fences and water infrastructure
- Valid driver license, legal work status
- Own vehicle for personal use
- Willingness to communicate and coordinate work schedule
- Three years of experience in related work
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working cattle horseback independently and with crew
- Experience processing, doctoring, calving
- Own horses and tack
- Experience shoeing horses, roping cattle
- Five or more years of relevant experience
