Flying B Ranch Middle Fork of the Salmon River – Idaho Wilderness

Trade ordinary for extraordinary. Join our team in Idaho’s backcountry and spend your season where horses replace traffic, hard work is rewarding, and every day brings something different. We’re seeking a motivated Ranch Hand / Wrangler / Packer who takes pride in caring for stock, supporting guests, and living and working as part of a close-knit team in a remote wilderness setting. If you enjoy the outdoors, aren’t afraid of physical work, and want an experience that few jobs can offer, we’d love to hear from you.

Position Overview

Flying B Ranch is located in the remote Idaho wilderness along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This is a physically demanding, hands-on position that changes with the seasons.

Ranch Hands/Wranglers/Packers play a key role in livestock care, property maintenance, guest services, and seasonal operations. This position requires strong work ethic, flexibility, initiative, and a positive attitude.

Core Responsibilities

Duties change throughout the season and include, but are not limited to, the following:

Property Care & Maintenance

  • Safeguard and maintain Ranch buildings and furnishings.
  • Address maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Log repair needs on the clipboard located in the lodge kitchen.
  • Maintain fences and corrals throughout the season.
  • Keep Ranch grounds neat, organized, and attractive.
  • Mow and water lawns regularly.
  • Prevent stock from grazing on lawns or near cabins.
  • Use a weed eater where mowers cannot reach.
  • Keep all areas free of trash and debris.
  • Assist with water diversion during runoff to minimize property damage.

Livestock & Herd Management

  • Provide daily care and monitoring of all stock.
  • Immediately report health concerns to management.
  • Assist with herd health and hoof care between scheduled veterinarian and farrier visits.
  • Rotate and ride stock regularly throughout the season.
  • Follow Forest Service grazing permit requirements.
  • Rotate grazing areas on Ranch property as directed.
  • Important: Livestock are among our most valuable assets. Abuse, neglect, or improper handling is strictly prohibited.

Tack & Equipment Care

  • Perform saddle and tack repairs as needed.
  • Clean and oil saddles each winter.
  • Wash saddle pads throughout the season.
  • Operate Ranch equipment only if authorized.
  • Log all equipment use, maintenance, and issues in maintenance manuals.

Hay & Irrigation

  • Assist with hay farming and irrigation operations.
  • Change irrigation pipe as directed.
  • Participate in daily irrigation management.

Trail Work

  • Assist with seasonal trail clearing and maintenance.

Seasonal Herd Movement

  • Move stock between Flying B and Root Ranch as needed due to grazing conditions.
  • Assist with herd transfers during drought or seasonal changes.

Fall Hunting Season Support

  • Help prepare trails and camps for hunting season.
  • Assist with pack services for deer and elk hunters.
  • We provide packing services only (no guided hunts).

Guest Services & Hospitality

Although this is a ranch position, we are ultimately in the hospitality business.

Responsibilities include:

  • Saddling stock for guests.
  • Conducting horse rides.
  • Responding to guest requests.
  • Communicating clearly with guests to ensure a smooth experience.
  • Providing friendly, professional service at all times.

Many guest activities are not scheduled far in advance, so flexibility and communication are critical.

Communication Skills

This position requires:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to coordinate between the backcountry and the main office in Salmon

Work Environment

  • Remote wilderness setting
  • Physically demanding work
  • Long hours during peak season

  • Requires self-motivation and independence

Personal Expectations

We expect all Ranch staff to:

  • Maintain a pleasant, professional attitude
  • Work well with others
  • Be self-motivated and responsible
  • Take pride in keeping the Ranch clean and orderly
  • Address livestock or safety concerns immediately

At Flying B Ranch, we take pride in our land, our livestock, and the experience we provide to our shareholders and guests. Team members who thrive here are hardworking, adaptable, and committed to excellence.
