Position Title: Ranch Manager
Schedule: Flexible based on ranch needs
Location: Tecate Horse Rescue Ranch, Tecate, California
Reports To: Executive Director / CEO

Overview

The Ranch Manager at Tecate Horse Rescue is responsible for ensuring the continuity, coordination, and oversight of daily horse care operations at the ranch. This position focuses specifically on maintaining consistent feeding, monitoring, and care coverage for the rescue herd through the recruitment and coordination of support personnel and volunteers.

This is not a horse training role. Horse training, behavioral evaluation, and training decisions remain solely under the direction of the CEO.

The Ranch Manager position is initially structured as a part-time position at approximately 20 hours per week, with the intention of transitioning to a full-time role once sustainable funding is secured.

Primary Responsibilities

🐴 Horse Care Oversight & Coordination

• Ensure that all horses receive appropriate daily feeding, water, observation, and basic care coverage.
• Ensure reliable staffing and volunteer coverage for:
•• Feedings
•• Hay and water checks
•• Monitoring of underweight or special-needs horses
•• Ranch safety and security related to horse care
• Communicate concerns regarding horse condition, injuries, illness, or behavioral concerns promptly to the CEO.

> Important:

> The Ranch Manager is not responsible for horse training or rehabilitation training plans. All training decisions and training supervision remain under the direction of the CEO.

👥 Recruitment & Team Building

The Ranch Manager’s primary growth responsibility is the recruitment of individuals to help oversee and direct horse care operations.

This includes recruiting:

• Feeding coordinators
• Horse care volunteers
• Medical/farrier scheduling assistants
• Weight tracking and monitoring volunteers
• Ranch support leads

The Ranch Manager is responsible for:

• Helping onboard and orient new horse care volunteers
• Ensuring someone is assigned to assist or supervise volunteers when needed
• Helping build a dependable horse care team structure

📋 Scheduling & Coverage

• Coordinate and maintain horse-care-related schedules.
• Ensure coverage is arranged for essential horse care tasks seven days per week.
• Communicate scheduling gaps or operational concerns to the CEO promptly.

📊 Reporting & Communication

Provide regular updates to the CEO regarding:
• Horse care coverage
• Volunteer participation
• Staffing needs
• Areas of concern
• Recruitment progress
• Recommend improvements or operational changes when appropriate.

Work Structure

• Initial schedule: approximately 20 hours per week
• Position intended to expand into a full-time role as funding and staffing allow.
• Work schedule may vary depending on ranch and horse care needs.
• Some administrative or scheduling work may be performed remotely when appropriate.
