Rolling Hills Farm/Rolling Hills Estate Winery (RH) a 1,300 acre privately owned and operated full working winery & farm in Westport, NY in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains on Lake Champlain, is rebuilding our cattle & farm operation from the ground up. RH also includes high-end farm winery lodging on a nearby part of the property.

We are seeking a Full Time Ranch Manager to run all functions and to rebuild our multi-faceted livestock operation to create top quality beef.

As Ranch Manager, your role will be to oversee & manage all operations on the farm with an emphasis on the Hereford/Angus cow-calf program. The ranch previously had over 210 head of cattle plus milkers, Berkshire pigs, sheep, work horses & chickens. We will start small at 35-40 yearlings and grow from there under your supervision. Responsibilities include all aspects of ranch management including ensuring cattle health, safety, nutrition, reproduction, calf development, and weaning. Pasture management/maintenance, forage procurement/management and farm ground management/maintenance are required.

Your role will ensure that herd health protocols are followed and implemented in a quality and timely manner, care and maintenance of facilities and equipment is followed and documented as well as managing our feeding program to ensure herd health and development in the most humane & economical manner.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the herd health and development are followed and well documented. Ability to use Microsoft Excel to track animals with the end goal of creating quality genetics & carcass traits of the herd.
  • Assist with USDA slaughterhouse appointments & meat selection.
  • Assist with livestock acquisition, breeding and health maintenance including, but not limited to, beef cattle. There will be layer hens & 2-3 dairy cows with the possibility of other animals as the ranch progresses and grows.
  • Manage grazing (fencing, rotational grazing, water and supplemental feeding)
  • Repairing animal enclosures, feeding troughs, permanent fencing, etc.
  • Developing and executing breeding plans for cattle.
  • Manage farm ground to maximize economic productivity – cattle forage for the ranch, hay production or leasing of land.
  • Ensure care, cleanliness and maintenance of facilities and equipment are followed and documented – suitable for tours or winery and lodging clients.
  • Knowledge of planting, cutting, and bailing hay
  • Tractor work (depending on time of year, haying, spreading manure, moving round bales)
  • Development of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Working closely with our farm veterinarian and cattle consultant to ensure success.
  • Organized self-starter with excellent observation skills, and the ability to self-manage and problem solve independently.
  • Development of any new livestock enterprises and creating and executing a phased plan for establishing livestock enterprises now and in anticipation of future operations.
