Position:
Ranch Manager
Description of Operation:
- 1600+ acre ranch located near Athens, TX (1.5 hours SE of Dallas)
- commercial cow/calf and stocker operation and typically run 450 mother cows and background all of our calves
- we own our natural service bulls
- cow herd is primarily comprised of a fall calving Angus herd and a spring calving Brangus herd
- goal is to produce top quality replacement females that will be a productive, easy fleshing animal in either our cowherd or someone else’s; use a combination of natural service and sometimes AI.
- produce 2000 bales annually of coastal bermuda round bales, haying experience a must
- loads sold annually to Superior Livestock auction, private treaty from the ranch, or local sales
- owner and wife live on site and additional help is contracted as needed
- good fences already in place, permanent and some electric
- our gentle herds are handled currently with horse, feed truck, and border collies
Ideal candidate skills:
- use of border collies and horse to herd is a plus and welcome
- single or family is welcome
- practice low stress cattle handling techniques and follow BQA guidelines
- ability to run haying equipment
- some handyman skills
- some equipment repair and general ranch maintenance skills
- great work ethic and good follow through
- knowledgeable in herd health and nutrition at all stages of production
- feeding decisions, doctoring
- tagging, calving, processing, weaning
- moving cattle between pastures
- growing replacement females and handling some first calf heifers
- run hay and baling equipment each year
- general rotational grazing and pasture management
- A/I skills and palpation, some knowledge preferred
- electric fence construction and maintenance
- forage production/ how to take and read soil samples (hay and pasture)
- able to evaluate and cull cattle by phenotype when necessary
- keep detail cattle records
