Job Title: Ranch Manager

Ranch: Our family-owned regenerative ranch in Southern Colorado holistically manages our 230-acre ranch raising cattle, pigs, chickens, and ducks. Our ranch sits at an elevation of 7,500 feet at the base of the Spanish Peaks. We are actively looking to increase our acreage under management through purchase or lease. Our ranch’s infrastructure is in excellent condition and includes two houses, a yurt, a 10-stall horse barn and an indoor riding arena. We are hands-on owners who live full time on the ranch, but we also have off ranch responsibilities that require semi-frequent travel.

Ranch Operations: Currently, the ranch runs a grassfed stocker cattle program using rotational grazing strategies. We sell finished beef direct to consumer and wholesale. A cow/calf operation may begin as we have a desire to develop our own herd. The ranch has laying hens and laying ducks from which we sell the eggs. We have a few pigs that we will harvest next year. We lease hunting rights to a reputable outfitter and have private fishing for brown trout on 1 mile of the Cucharas River. While we do not currently have horses, we are actively looking for kids’ and ranch horses. In the future it is possible that we start a kids’ riding program, but not certain. Friends and family also visit the ranch regularly.

Principal Functions: The RM is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ranch which includes complete care of the animals, equipment, machines, land and infrastructure. RM is expected to work independently, prioritize tasks and communicate effectively. RM may need to bring in people for Day-Work or part-time/project-based work. RM will lead and supervise day workers. Grazing plans and long-range planning will be done with Owners.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Familiarity or expertise in holistic land management
  • Knowledge of and personal commitment to conservation, land and water management, and humane treatment of all animals
  • 3-5 years’ experience as ranch manager or 5+ years as ranch hand
  • College Degree in related field
  • Driver’s License and ability to operate heavy machinery
  • Cattle care and animal husbandry, horsemanship, etc
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds and pass drug screen

Skills Required:

  • High energy level, flexible, and self-starter
  • Record Maintenance for vehicles, equipment, homes, etc.
  • Good communication, organizational and computer skills
  • Works well with others – Owners, guests, employees, outside contractors, etc
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills
  • Dedicated to creating a safe work environment and best practices for self and others

Additional Requirements:

Cattle Operations: Must have strong experience and knowledge of animal husbandry. Prior experience running a cow/calf operation including nutrition, reproduction, genetics, general health of cattle. Ranch management experience is a plus with desire to improve land and herd. Computer record keeping of herd required (such as PastureMap and CattleMax)

Equestrian Operations: While the ranch does not have horses, the Owners are actively trying to acquire a total of four kids’ and ranch horses. Barn management and duties to include but not limited to maintenance, exercise riding, saddling and the care of horses.

Water Rights: Knowledge of wells, cisterns, ditch maintenance and water rights usage required.

Caretaking Responsibilities: RM will oversee general maintenance of the land and infrastructure (fences, gates, etc) as well as the two homes and other barns on the property. RM will make repairs or contract out as necessary.

Ranch Staff: The Owners are involved in the day-to-day operations of the ranch. One Operations team member (who assists with guest operations and back office functions such as payroll) works out of the main house and ranch office. Our current ranch hand is leaving to work with his family and their cattle operation.

Application Process: The RM is a salaried full-time and year-round position including housing and healthcare stipend. Salary based on experience. Housing suited to individual or couple.

To apply, please send cover letter, photo and resume to our email address.
