We are a large, working ranch in the Madison Valley in Montana that used to operate as an eco-hotel, but now is a private ranch for the recreational use of the owners, their family and friends. We do not have any paying customers, but try to operate as a five-star retreat. Our guests come to hike, look at wildlife, fly-fish, ride horses, shoot the clay course or just relax.

We run cattle on the ranch from May through October, some combination of yearlings and pairs that total around 1,500. We lease the grazing rights, but the cattle are our responsibility once they arrive. The Ranch Manager will be responsible for the Cattle and Equine Operation, its employees and the annual planning and management of the day-to-day operations. The Manager will represent the ranch’s interests when coordinating and negotiating with the ranch’s grazing client/clients. The Manager will also represent the ranch in dealing with neighbors, water rights, easement holders, and all government agencies that monitor the cattle use on the ranch.

The Ranch Manager will be required to help produce an annual operating budget and capital expenditure budget for the Cattle and Equine Operations. Budgets and Variances will be reviewed by the General Manager on a monthly basis.

It will be the duty and responsibility of the Ranch Manager to design and implement a grazing plan that preserves and enhances the ranch’s grasslands. The Ranch Manager will advise the owners of needed improvements and new opportunities that are advantageous to the ranch’s overall ecological and economic health and vitality.

This position requires knowledge of ranch topography, fencing (of all types), waterline systems, and general maintenance.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Creation and implementation of grazing plan
  2. Daily monitor herd by riding horseback, in a truck and/ or ATV and identify sick animals and determine proper treatment or contact veterinarian
  3. Maintain and build fence as necessary
  4. The security of each pasture’s fence lines before it receives cattle and during the cattle’s occupancy per the annual rotation schedule
  5. Hire, train and supervise ranch hands as necessary
  6. The delivery of stock water to each pasture previous to and during cattle occupation
  7. Maintenance schedule of all vehicles and trailers used by Cattle Operations
  8. Minor repairs and maintenance of buildings used by Cattle Operations
  9. Management of inventory of salt and mineral and their distribution
  10. Function of all ranch gates including corrals
  11. Coordinating with grazing client
  12. Coordinating with Government representatives
  13. Coordinating with conservation easement representatives
  14. Coordinating with neighbors
  15. Water Rights management
  16. Design and implementation of the Grazing Plan
  17. Herd health
  18. Noxious weed management plan and implementation
  19. Ecological balance
  20. Horse herd management, including being in charge of making sure the horses are being rotated on grass during the summer months, as well as coordinating vet/farrier schedule.
  21. Maintenance of roads and Cattle and Horse Operations facilities
  22. Coordinating with General Manager
  23. Maintain high standards of animal welfare

In addition, the Ranch Manager will assist and coordinate with guest services to accommodate the functionality of the ranch as a whole. For example, this would include taking guests on occasional rides and allowing the experienced riders amongst the guests to participate in helping to move cattle from pasture to pasture.

Dates of Employment

The cattle season begins with fixing fence in April and goes through November. Ideally, we would have a couple that would like to stay here over the winter and be caretakers for the ranch, which involves the difficult job of plowing a 3.5 mile road up to the headquarters to allow for propane truck access and the ability to do the necessary building checks.
