EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Assists with cattle operation; vaccinates cattle and provides other medication, as needed; weans, brands, neuters and sorts calves; puts in ear tags; feeds cattle; rotates cattle through different District pastures, feeds and transports cattle to other locations as needed.
  • Maintains District farm fields and grounds; discs, rips, levels, rolls, plants and maintains fields; mows and cuts grounds and fields, rakes, bales, picks up hay from fields; performs weed abatement by spraying herbicides.
  • Maintains and repairs wooden and wire fences around pastures to ensure that cattle are secured in designated areas; performs basic welding of braces, gates and corrals.
  • Assists with irrigation of fields and farmland; assists in moving and transporting irrigation pipes.
  • Operates light to heavy District vehicles and equipment, such as tractors, excavators, loaders, backhoes, dozers, grader, baler, swather and other trucks and equipment of various sizes.
  • Ensures that adequate materials and supplies are available for work.
  • Performs miscellaneous building and grounds maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, electrical troubleshooting, road construction, concrete, fencing and landscaping duties.
  • Services and maintains mobile equipment in a clean and orderly condition; makes minor repairs as needed; assists mechanics with repairs that cannot be performed by one person.
  • May be required to assist Reclamation Operator on an as needed basis.
  • Assists with construction, maintenance and repair of District levee system, including transporting and unloading dirt and rock, building roads around bottom of levees, filling in wash-outs etc.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, tools, equipment and supplies required to perform work in a standard ranch, cattle and farming operation.
  • Principles and practices of operating heavy equipment and District vehicles related to the work.
  • Basic principles and practices of mobile equipment servicing and repair.
  • Safety practices related to the work.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical and hydraulic principles.
  • Applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Computer applications related to the work
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and District staff, in person and over the telephone.

Skill in:

  • Performing skilled and semi-skilled work related to the District’s ranch, cattle farming operation and levee maintenance.
  • Performing servicing and minor maintenance on a variety of mobile equipment.
  • Responding effectively to emergency situations and troubleshooting such situations.
  • Safely using hand and power tools related to the work and driving and operating trucks, farming equipment and other equipment.
  • Interpreting and explaining regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Making accurate mathematical calculations.
  • Reading maps, manuals and specifications.
  • Prioritizing own work and using independent judgment within procedural guidelines.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience with livestock, farming, ranch operations and the operation of farming vehicles and equipment.

Licenses and Certifications:
Good – Use on rest of field positions except as noted.
Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must obtain a California Class B driver’s license within a timeframe specified by the District.
