LOCATION SUMMARY

The Flying D Ranch is a spectacular property located in southwest Montana, minutes from Bozeman, MT straddling the Gallatin and Madison Rivers. The property operates as a working ranch managed for the production of bison, hay and crops, all managed with a conservation minded approach. A 115,000-acre Ranch, the Flying D ranges from steep, forested land on the south end, to rolling meadows in the central portion, to high-rolling bench topography on the north end. A good habitat for a variety of native wildlife, the Flying D is home to established populations of mule deer, white-tailed deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Rocky Mountain gray wolf, Shiras moose, bear and mountain lions, among others. The Flying D Ranch also boasts excellent native trout and grayling fisheries in its rivers and streams. Recreational opportunities abound for all employees on the Ranch.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Ranch Technician I / Grazier will assist with several support functions on the Gallatin unit farming and bison enterprises of the Ranch. This position will help to operate and maintain the irrigation infrastructure on the Ranch while also holding the primary responsibility for grazing bison and maintaining fence and stockwater on the Gallatin Farm. This position will gain irrigation experience in wheel lines, center pivots, pumps, and motors.

The Ranch Technician I / Grazier will plan and execute a regenerative and adaptive grazing plan focusing on the Gallatin Farm acres and surrounding rangelands. The position will be instrumental to the operation and maintenance of the farm and construction equipment, buildings, and facilities.

As a Ranch Technician I / Grazier, the job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate and maintain irrigation systems, including wheel lines and center pivot.
  • Repair irrigation equipment and stockwater infrastructure, including pumps, small engines, plumbing and three-phase electrical circuits.
  • Collaborate with management staff to create and execute an annual ranch-wide grazing plan.
  • Assist in completion and execution of an adaptive and regenerative grazing plan for the Gallatin Farm and surrounding rangelands.
  • Extensive use of electric fence to execute the Gallatin Farm adaptive grazing plan.
  • Use low-stress stockmanship to handle intensively managed bison grazing.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for improved regenerative outcomes through innovative grazing or farming practices.
  • Assist in range, hay/crop and soil recording and monitoring activities.
  • Maintain lawn and landscaping at various building locations.
  • Maintain, build, and repair fences and gates.
  • Winter snow removal at specified Company structures and residences.
  • Perform cutting and welding for repair and fabrication of tools and equipment.
  • Perform general Ranch work.
  • Assist with bison moves around the Ranch, working in assigned positions while weighing or processing bison throughout the year.
  • Safely operate and maintains vehicles, tractors, and heavy equipment with various attachments.
  • Safely operate ATVs and UTVs.
  • Participate in ranch safety programs.
  • Safely haul and back bumper pull and gooseneck trailers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Company-provided accommodations will include an unfurnished single-family housing with all basic kitchen and laundry appliances. Utilities included are as follows: propane, electric and water with a communal trash disposal site.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

A minimum of an associate degree in an agriculture field or equivalent professional experience is required. An understanding or background in irrigation equipment, farming/ranching, and mechanical experience is highly preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The employee must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. The employee must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

The employee must be able to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. The employee must be able to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

The employee must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

If position requires operation of a vehicle, the employee must possess a valid Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. The employee’s driving record must meet the standards and requirements of the Company and the Company’s insurance carrier.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • The employee must adhere to Company and Ranch policies and procedures which are included in the Company’s Employee Handbook.
  • The employee must present documentation establishing both identity and employment authorization within three days of hire, pursuant to federal law.
  • The employee must provide own means of transportation to travel from Ranch location to local town for personal needs.
