Blue Creek Ranch is an 85,000-acre bison operation and 4,000hd on-ranch grain finishing operation in the Nebraska Sandhills, pioneering regenerative ranching and conservation practices. We are looking for a dedicated, hands-on Ranch Technician to help care for our bison while balancing responsibilities across both the ranch and finishing lot.

YOU’LL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU:

  • Love working with animals and prioritize their health and well-being.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in a hands-on role, balancing independent tasks (80%) with collaborative teamwork (20%).
  • Are detail-oriented and enjoy maintaining high standards.
  • Enjoy routine but can adapt when situations call for it.
  • Are eager to learn and grow in a cutting-edge bison operation.
  • Are a team player.

JOB PURPOSE

The Ranch Technician is responsible for working in both the grazing and on-ranch grain finishing operations at Blue Creek Ranch. This position supports adaptive grazing and herd management in pastures, while also assisting with on-ranch grain finishing operations, animal performance, and facility upkeep. By working across both settings, you will contribute to sustainable bison management practices that optimize animal health, land stewardship, and operational efficiency.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Ranch Duties (Approx. 50%):

  • Work with the Manager to implement a comprehensive grazing plan within TEM guidelines.
  • Prepare pastures ahead of grazing rotations (fences, water systems, forage inventory).
  • Move and handle bison in pastures and corrals using low-stress techniques on foot, ATV, or UTV.
  • Develop, install, and maintain permanent and temporary electric fencing.
  • Maintain and repair water infrastructure including windmills, solar units, and stock tanks.
  • Assist in ranch infrastructure upkeep, including corrals, ranch buildings, and roads.
  • Actively participating in the Ranch Safety Program and promoting a safe working environment.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Ranch Manager or Foreman.

On-Ranch Finishing Duties (Approx. 50%):

  • Monitor and maintain the free-choice cafeteria-style feeding program.
  • Track mineral supplementation and make recommendations to improve animal health and weight gain.
  • Keep detailed feeding and inventory records using AgriWebb technology.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on on-ranch finishing equipment (trucks, tractors, wheel loaders, UTVs).
  • Maintain on-ranch finishing facilities including pens, waters, fencing, and dust control.
  • Assist with shipping, receiving, and monitoring animals in the facility.

WHAT THIS JOB IS NOT:

  • A management or supervisory position
  • A conventional feedlot-only or ranch-only role

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • Strong personal character, including reliability, integrity, humility, and a positive attitude toward teamwork and continuous learning.
  • Commitment to safety in all tasks, with the ability to follow established protocols, identify hazards, and maintain a safe working environment for self, coworkers, and the animals.
  • Must present documentation establishing both identity and employment authorization within three days of hire pursuant to federal law.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Access to a personal cell phone with active service.
  • If position requires operation of vehicles, and you’ll need to possess a valid driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.  Your driving record will need to meet the standards and requirements of the Company and the Company’s insurance provider.

Preferred:

  • Heavy equipment operating skills are a plus.
