Ranch & Wildlife Manager
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Ranch & Wildlife Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations, wildlife management, habitat improvement, infrastructure maintenance, and long-term development of a private cattle and hunting ranch located in Durango, Mexico.
The ranch is focused on livestock operations, conservation, habitat management, and the responsible development of native wildlife, including mule deer, desert white-tailed deer, and desert bighorn sheep.
This is a full-time, long-term position for a highly responsible, hands-on professional who is comfortable working in a remote ranch environment and managing both people and field operations.
The selected candidate must live permanently on the ranch. Housing will be provided, and the candidate may relocate with his or her spouse and family, if desired.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all daily ranch operations.
- Develop and implement wildlife and habitat management programs.
- Monitor mule deer, desert white-tailed deer, desert bighorn sheep, predators, and other native species.
- Manage trail cameras, wildlife surveys, population records, and field observations.
- Coordinate supplemental feeding, water sources, feeders, mineral stations, and wildlife infrastructure.
- Manage cattle operations, grazing plans, livestock health, and ranch productivity.
- Supervise ranch employees, cowboys, maintenance personnel, guides, and contractors.
- Oversee fences, roads, water systems, wells, tanks, buildings, equipment, and vehicles.
- Plan and supervise habitat improvement projects.
- Coordinate predator monitoring and responsible population management.
- Support hunting operations, guest visits, guides, and ranch logistics.
- Maintain accurate operational, wildlife, maintenance, and budget records.
- Prepare regular reports for ownership.
- Develop annual operating plans, budgets, priorities, and improvement projects.
- Ensure that ranch operations comply with applicable environmental, wildlife, livestock, and hunting regulations.
- Promote a culture of conservation, safety, accountability, and respect for the land.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management, Animal Science, Range Management, Biology, Natural Resources, Agriculture, or a related field.
- At least 10 years of experience in ranch management, wildlife management, livestock operations, conservation, or a related field.
- Strong practical field experience in arid or semi-arid environments.
- Experience managing wildlife populations, habitat, water resources, fencing, roads, and ranch infrastructure.
- Experience supervising ranch employees and field crews.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound operational decisions.
- Willingness to live permanently on the ranch.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to operate ranch vehicles, tractors, equipment, and field tools.
- Good physical condition and willingness to work outdoors in remote and demanding conditions.
- Strong personal integrity, reliability, discretion, and commitment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with mule deer or desert bighorn sheep.
- Experience managing hunting or conservation ranches.
- Experience working with biologists, veterinarians, wildlife authorities, landowners, and hunting organizations.
- Knowledge of wildlife capture, tagging, tracking, census methods, trail-camera programs, and population monitoring.
- Knowledge of cattle management and rotational grazing.
- Experience with ranch budgeting, purchasing, maintenance planning, and reporting.
- Bilingual English and Spanish skills are preferred but not required.
- Experience in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sonora, or Durango is highly valued.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a mature, experienced, hands-on ranch professional who combines technical wildlife knowledge with strong operational leadership.
This individual should be comfortable working in the field, supervising employees, solving practical problems, maintaining infrastructure, managing wildlife and livestock, and reporting directly to ownership.
The successful candidate must be honest, disciplined, organized, proactive, and capable of operating with limited day-to-day supervision.
Location and Living Arrangements
The position is based full-time at a private ranch in Durango, Mexico.
Permanent residence on the ranch is required.
The ranch will provide suitable housing. The selected candidate may live on the property with his or her spouse and family, if desired.
The position is best suited for someone who values rural life, nature, conservation, outdoor work, privacy, and long-term involvement in the development of a high-quality ranch operation.
