SUMMARY: 

This is an ideal position for the person who is interested in rangeland improvement, invasive and noxious weed mitigation on a Montana ranch. Great opportunity to learn plant ID & rangeland improvement techniques and plant control practices. This is a seasonal position. The weed control technician will assist the Rangeland Specialist and staff by performing tasks related to noxious or invasive plant species control.  Work may include evenings and weekends. Room and board provided.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks related to the control of select undesirable noxious & invasive weeds using cultural, mechanical, chemical and biological methods.
  • Safely operate various equipment, ATV’s, UTV’s and backpack sprayers.
  • Mix and apply herbicides following label requirements to manage weeds or other vegetation on grasslands and pastures.
  • Review and understand chemical labels and SDS sheets for each product in use before application. Comply with all warnings and instructions.
  • Maintain accurate daily herbicide application records.
  • Follow safety procedures for storage and handling of herbicides and ranch equipment.
  • Adhere to strict safety/environmental regulations.
  • Assist with calibrating sprayers and perform routine maintenance of all application equipment and materials.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Assist Rangeland Specialist with monitoring, photo plots, and weed mapping.
  • Record locations of problem weed areas, treated areas, and special project areas.
  • Properly dispose of empty chemical containers and rinsate materials.
  • Perform other ranch duties as assigned.
  • Possible exposure to dust, pollen, insects, thorns, and other environmental irritants.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of plant identification and/or noxious weed identification preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of GPS/GIS equipment and programs, preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to traverse many different terrains.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work under changing circumstances
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work schedule and job duties
  • Ability to work long hours for several consecutive days, including weekends and holidays, in an isolated setting.
  • Work performed primarily outdoors in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain and snow.
  • Regular exposure to pesticides and other chemicals. MUST USE PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE).
  • Prolonged sitting and operation of motor vehicles including ATV’s, UTV’s, and spray trucks.
  • Punctual
  • Resourceful and able to solve problems with minimal oversight
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull containers, equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds or greater with assistance.
  • Ability to conduct activities involving walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling/bending, twisting and reaching.
  • Honest, observant and careful

  • Attend CPR training provided by employer

  • Possess appropriate legal documentation to work in the United States.
  • Provide stable work history and references
