Rock Hills Ranch
(January - May)
Our family ranch in north central South Dakota has an immediate opening for a seasonal ranch hand, now through May 15.
During this season, our operations revolve around winter grazing/feeding 500-600 mother cows and backgrounding 1000-1500 calves in preparation for summer grazing. This position will involve both sides of the operation.
Duties assigned will depend on experience and aptitude, and may include:
- delivering supplement to the cows with a bale bed pickup
- building/maintaining electric fence for containment on cornstalks
- operating feeding equipment (wheel loader, tractor, feed wagon)
- basic maintenance of feeding equipment (grease, check fluids, etc)
- processing cattle (sorting, vaccinating, deworming, tagging, implants)
- scraping pens
- cleaning out water tanks
- loading and hauling cattle with a 24′ gooseneck stock trailer
- operating a 4 wheeler or UTV to move cattle (no horseback work)
Significant experience with either cattle or equipment is required, great if you are handy with both.
If you’re a rock star, there’s a possibility of a future beyond May. Summer grazing operations are very complex and require a lot of skill with little time for hand-holding, so this is only a possibility if you’re bringing high-level skills to the table.
