Alford Lake Camp is a residential girls’ camp in the heart of mid-coast Maine, near the picturesque towns of Camden and Rockland. At ALC, kindness and caring are at the core of our community. The Head of Riding must build strong relationships with campers, staff, directors, and local partners while fostering a supportive and communicative environment essential to the program’s success.
The Head of Riding will be responsible for the care and maintenance of 10-12 horses and the management of 6-7 staff members, as well as teaching lessons (English-style) to campers of all skill levels and being a part of the camp community at large.
Essential Job Functions:
- Caring for the horses
- Responsible for the overall health of the horses
- Communicating with the Director about any horse health issues
- Contacting the Vet for medical care and medications
- Ordering/purchasing feed
- Communicating concerns to the Director regarding any behavioral issues with a horse (i.e. if they might need to be swapped out)
- Training and supervising the Riding staff and Stablehands
- Assessing the skill level of the staff to place them in proper teaching roles
- Creating a riding lesson schedule for the campers and placing them in skill-based groups
- Making sure the barn and grounds are kept clean and in excellent condition
- Working with the Site and Facilities Manager concerning fences, honey wagon, and any repairs that may be needed.
Other duties:
- As a member of the community, you will be expected to help out in various ways:
- Helping to serve dinner one night a week when the kitchen staff are off
- Eating in the Dining Room at a table with campers
- Taking a duty shift 1-2 nights on the tent line
- Being present at all-camp community meetings/activities i.e. Logs, Campfire, Sunday-in-the-Pines, Beach Day, etc.
Qualifications:
- Must ride and teach English riding
- Must hold a current certification as an English riding instructor from a recognized organization or riding school. If the certification does not have an expiration date, it must have been earned within the last two years.
- If you do not have current certifications, we will consider documented endorsements of successful experience teaching formal horseback riding instruction within the past two years.
- Must have documentation from an outside source of engagement in riding supervision and teaching within the past two years.
- Must have documentation of at least 4 weeks of supervisory and teaching experience at a riding facility within the last 3 years.
- Candidates must have a current First Aid & CPR certification or be willing to obtain the certification prior to the contract start date
