Position: Summer Range Rider (Manager Track)
Location: Remote forest allotment near the Idaho border
Season: Mid to late May through end of October
Overview
We are seeking a highly capable and self-motivated individual to serve as a summer range rider on a remote forest allotment near the Idaho border. This position is responsible for the daily management and monitoring of approximately 400 head of cow-calf pairs, along with a group of yearlings. The role requires strong horsemanship, advanced cattle management experience, sound judgment, and the ability to operate independently in rugged conditions.
This is a remote summer range with consistent predator presence, including wolves and bears, and regular conflict is expected. The cow camp is located approximately 1,000 feet below the primary grazing range, requiring daily travel between camp and cattle.
This position is structured as a pathway to a full-time, year-round ranch manager role for the right individual.
Key Responsibilities
- Ride and monitor cattle daily across a large forest allotment
- Actively manage cattle distribution to optimize forage use and prevent drift
- Travel between cow camp and range as part of daily operations
- Check and maintain water sources, addressing issues as they arise
- Identify and respond to health issues, injuries, and predator-related incidents
- Maintain constant awareness of predator activity and adjust cattle management accordingly
- Implement practical strategies to reduce predator pressure and cattle losses
- Monitor range conditions and adjust grazing patterns accordingly
- Repair and maintain fences, gates, and basic infrastructure
- Communicate regularly with ownership on cattle performance, location, range conditions, and predator activity
- Assist with gathering, moving, and sorting cattle as needed
Qualifications
- Advanced cattle management experience in open range or forest allotments
- Strong horsemanship and ability to handle cattle effectively in rough, mountainous terrain
- Direct experience managing livestock in wolf and/or bear country required
- Demonstrated ability to respond to predator pressure and make sound decisions independently
- High level of accountability, reliability, and attention to detail
- Physically capable of long days in the saddle and significant elevation changes
- Experience with low-stress livestock handling expected
Requirements
- Must provide a minimum of two reliable saddle horses suitable for mountain terrain
- Ability to care for and manage personal horses in a remote setting
- Valid driver’s license preferred
