Pu'u O Hoku Ranch
(May - November (year round possible))
Pu’u O Hoku Ranch is a rustic retreat center surrounded by 14,000 acres of forest, agricultural and conservation land, supported by a biodynamic farm, small cattle operation, and hunting program. The ranch is far away from the hustle and bustle of cities and highways and provides a beautiful place to immerse yourself in nature and the wildlife of Hawaii.
Duties involve sole charge, care and exercise of eight horses, ranging from green to beginner friendly. Taking out guest rides of 1-4 riders at a time, pasture rotation and maintenance, as well as occasional assistance with upkeep of ranch facilities and weekend livestock checks. (no stalls or pens to muck!)
Horsemanship and riding experience required as well as confidence working with green horses. The ability to trim hooves and possibly tack on shoes is strongly preferred but not required if you are willing to learn and have a basic understanding of anatomy and shoeing practices. (it is difficult to get a reliable farrier all the way out to Molokai)
Basic equine first aid knowledge is required (as there is not a vet on the island) as well as the ability to confidently take beginner riders and children down the trail safely.
This is a full time position with weekend duties compensated with time off during the week.
Housing and access to a shared vehicle with free gas is provided. Fresh fruits and vegetables from the ranch are provided weekly at no cost. Additional food from the ranch store is also available at a discount. Pay depends on experience.
Recreational activities for time off include hiking, fishing, surfing, snorkeling, relaxing at one of the nearby beaches, or visiting historical or cultural sites in the area.
Minimum 6-month commitment and year-round position may be considered for the right person.
