Duties include:
During the guest season (May-October) Long days are a must, 60 hours a week are the baseline. The trainer will help with guest trail riding while also dedicating time to the young horses that need training. Using their knowledge of the horse herd, they will assign horses to guests for the week and then lead the weekly program with the assistance of wranglers. In addition to this, there is pasture management and irrigation to ensure proper grass forage for the herd for as long as possible into the winter. The candidate will also be in charge of running the pivot sprinkler on our hay field about 20 miles away and scheduling the cutting/bailing and hauling to the main ranch. Staff will be available to help haul but it is the livestock managers responsibility to make sure it is happening.
During the off-season (November-April) The candidate will be responsible for actively training ranch horses to ensure that they’re ready for the next guest season. Maintain a healthy herd of approximately 35 ranch horses and grow the herd of highland cows while phasing out the angus. They’ll also be tasked with feeding out each year’s current steers and then scheduling/delivering them to the butcher. March/April is the calving season and the candidate will be responsible for ensuring a smooth livestock operation through the calving season. Dragging/Fertilizing/weed spraying all pastures as necessary in the spring before the guest season starts.
