AK Sled Dog Tours (operated by Dallas S.)
About Us:
We are the world’s premier long-distance sled dog racing kennel, with a record-breaking 6 Iditarod championships. Our mission is simple: raise and train the best sled dogs on earth while setting the industry standard for animal care and facility excellence. To support our racing passion, we operate year-round sled dog tours, with peak activity in summer and a more race-focused winter. Our 100-acre off-grid homestead near Talkeetna, Alaska, is both home and workplace for our dogs and a close-knit team of 15–30 staff members depending on the season.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a long-term, year-round individual—or potentially a couple—who will take primary responsibility for maintaining our kennel facility, equipment, and grounds, while assisting with daily animal care. This role may also involve supervising seasonal staff in infrastructure upkeep and dog care. You’ll be the backbone of the operation—keeping things running, solving problems, and jumping in wherever help is needed.
Responsibilities Include:
- Maintenance and repair of:
- – – Kennels, dog houses, fencing, and facility structures
- – – ATVs, snowmachines, vehicles, trailers, dog sleds, carts, and generators
- – – Staff housing, common areas, and water/power systems (off-grid infrastructure)
- Noticing when something needs to be fixed
- Seasonal snow removal and trail upkeep (summer and winter)
- Overseeing or assisting seasonal staff with daily equipment, facility, and dog care tasks
- Assisting with tour operations as needed
Who We’re Looking For:
- A physically fit, hardworking self-starter who thrives in a dynamic, outdoor environment
- Capable of diagnosing and addressing a wide variety of problems, from mechanical to structural to animal-related
- A “fix-it” mindset—whether the issue is a squeaky bearing, crooked dog house, or broken light switch
- Well-rounded skills in any combination of mechanical, construction, carpentry, welding, painting, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, or animal care
- Someone who takes pride in quality work and is proactive in identifying and solving problems
- Experience in animal care or kennel settings is a plus
- Must be comfortable living and working in a remote Alaskan setting (though our property has road access, running water, internet, and cell service)
Compensation:
$45,000 – $65,000 based on experience. Possible on-site housing. Exact details to be discussed during the interview process.
How to Apply:
Email us a resume, references, and a short note about why you’re interested. We’re looking for someone who’s not just skilled, but who fits our family-oriented and team-driven culture.
