Saffire Farm
This position assists in managing daily operations for a diverse, multi-species farm. This role focuses on intensive rotational grazing, livestock care, fence maintenance, and general property upkeep. The ideal candidate is adaptable, highly observant, and comfortable working independently around various types of livestock and working guardian dogs.
Core Responsibilities
Multi-species Livestock Care & Grazing
- Daily Welfare: Ensure constant access to fresh water and appropriate forage (grass or hay) for cattle, sheep, goats, mini donkeys, mules, and chickens.
- Rotational Grazing: Execute the intensive rotational grazing schedule, moving livestock across pastures to optimize forage health.
- Guardian Dog Care: Monitor and support the Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dogs, ensuring they are healthy and integrated with their herds.
- 4-H Support: Assist family members with specific 4-H animal projects, including basic handling, grooming, and prep work.
Infrastructure & Land Maintenance
- Fence Integrity: Check boundary and interior fencing daily. Perform immediate repairs on wood, wire, or electric fences to prevent livestock escapes.
- Tractor & Equipment Operations: Safely operate equipment for bushhogging pastures, clearing brush, and maintaining farm paths.
- Property Upkeep: Complete general maintenance on barns, shelters, watering systems, and farm tools.
- Agronomy Support: Help with pasture renovation, including broadcasting seed, planting grass, and monitoring soil coverage.
Garden & Diversified Tasks
- Garden Assistance: Perform manual labor in the farm garden, including weeding, planting, watering, and harvesting.
- Flexible Support: Handle miscellaneous farm projects and seasonal chores as they arise.
Requirements & Physical Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience handling livestock (particularly cattle, equines, or small ruminants) is highly preferred.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs frequently, walk long distances over uneven terrain, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of fencing techniques and experience operating a tractor with a bushhog attachment.
- Attributes: Strong situational awareness around animals, reliability, and clear communication skills.
