Cross Canyon Ranch is located in western Montana and is a beautiful 10,000 acre ranch with abundant game and wild life.

We are looking for a resident Ranch Manager who is ultimately in charge of all issues related to the management and operations, including animals, personnel, profit and loss and all activities related to the Cross Canyon Ranch.

The individual must:

  • Recruit/Retain one other full time ranch hand for ranching and farming activities.
  • Train and educate staff
  • Continue to pursue education in areas of ranching, ranch management, farming operations for hay production, and animal husbandry including basic veterinary skills.
  • Maintain Cow/Calf operation.

Specific Requirements:

  • Animal Husbandry – manage Red Angus cattle herd and maintain horses for the ranch
  • Veterinary – general veterinary requirements related to the health of heifers and calves as well as cattle and horses. Successfully manage the calving season. Obtain and exercise veterinary practices and annual plan for all animals.
  • Range Management – Design and estimate the forage needs for cattle on both range and irrigated pastures. Manage toward optimizing number of cattle and the land available with a goal of maintaining approximately 400 to 425 mother cows. Management of native range lands for optimum forage production. Select new and innovative techniques to increase forage capacity. Determine forage capacity. Manage and repair fencing.
  • Farming Activities – in the 416 irrigated acres achieve 3 tons per acre of hay production with 1 cutting. Increase the hay production. Manage the flood irrigation methods and practices. Manage the seeding and fertilization of all irrigated land for optimum production of forage and grass for winter feed. Work alongside staff for haying.
  • Building and Maintenance – manage buildings and maintain all physical assets in and around the headquarters in good physical condition.
  • Accounting Books and Record Keeping
  • Obtain or provide: licenses to apply herbicides and weed control, certification in ranching and farmland management, certification in veterinary practice.
  • Attend weekly meeting with owner to provide updates and reports
  • Manage hunters during October and November bow and rifle seasons.

Competencies:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Knowledge of tractors and haying equipment
  • Maintenance knowledge
  • Repair experience
  • Be able to maintain records on oil changes and all maintenance.
  • Welding experience beneficial
  • Have strong desire to see all equipment maintained and cleaned regularly.
  • Knowledge and experience with cow calf operations
  • Veterinarian experience.
  • Knowledge of best practices and ability to work with our vet to keep abreast of the newest methods to maintain cow and calf health.
  • Calving experience
  • Calf and Cow doctoring experience
  • Horses and 4 wheelers – this ranch operates with both.
  • Need practical experience with horses.
  • The ability to rope cattle is beneficial, but not critical.
  • Need to use 4 wheelers in a way that is safe and effective with cattle.
  • Manage staff.

You will need to manage staff in an efficient and motivating way to gain the best. This work is difficult and demanding. The pure physical effort needed cannot be overstated.
