The manager position for the Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Inc (“Xanterra”) horse operation at Yellowstone National Park is a full-time year-round position leading one of the most iconic guest horse operations in the country. The position is responsible for all aspects of the Xanterra Horse Operations including but not limited to trail rides, stagecoach and wagon rides, horse and supply procurement, horse care, tack equipment and facilities maintenance, and customer relations. Most importantly, this position will be responsible for running a safe operation for guests, employees, and animals.

Position Type: Full-Time Year Round
Schedule: ~40+ Hours Per Week
Location: Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park

Housing is not guaranteed for this position; employee may need to secure housing in Gardiner, Emigrant or Livingston, MT

Responsibilities

  • Interviewing and staff selection, employee training and development (including management training courses for Head Wranglers), corrective action, and ensuring effective use of the horse department workforce
  • Ensure compliance of horse operations with all regulatory and company safety, health, emergency, and environmental initiatives and procedures
  • Implementation, training, and enforcement of the Horse Department Standard Operating Procedures, including incident response and follow-up for guest, employee, and animal accidents
  • Oversight of scheduling for all Horse Department staff
  • Management of daily inspection processes for all horse, corral, related facilities, and tack
  • Coordination of tack and equipment repair and/or replacement
  • Ensure documentation of all required horse department logs, tags, reports, requests, and follow-up
  • Development, administration, and management of the Horse Department budget
  • Constant communication with leadership including supervisory staff, human resources, risk management, operations location management
  • Timely and accurate maintenance of horse usage
  • Procurement and delivery of livestock, tack, veterinary supplies, hay, grain, and other supplies and materials associated with the Horse Department
  • Manage and oversee lease agreements for livestock and equipment necessary for the Horse Department
  • Coordination and management of shoeing, vaccinations, Coggins testing, and other necessary veterinary care prior to returning stock to the park
  • Arranges veterinary visits per agricultural regulations, company policy, best practices and as otherwise needed
  • Disposition of expired stock
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director of Support Services

Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of horsemanship, animal science and agricultural business practices
  • Experience in trail riding and stagecoach and wagon driving
  • Effective operational leadership skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Effective organizational skills
  • Prior experience with livestock operations in the National Parks and NPS regulations concerning livestock operations preferred
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations pertaining to the use of commercial vehicles preferred.
  • Basic accounting and budgeting skills
  • CPR and First Aid certifications preferred
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, with a good driving record the past 3 years
  • Basic knowledge of tack, trail and corral repair and maintenance
  • Basic horse shoeing knowledge and ability

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be capable of lifting objects of up to 80 pounds
  • Must be capable of walking, bending, lifting, and standing throughout a 10-hour shift
